Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles #1) by Melina Marchetta - Review

❋ ❋ ❋

Finnikin's world was shattered when he was nine years old and the royal family of Lumatere was slaughtered, and imposter took control of the throne, and a curse binds all who remain within the kingdom. Those who managed to escape before the curse took effect got stuck roaming the continent as exiles. Now, ten years later, Finnikin and his mentor meet with Evanjalin, a novice claiming that Balthazar, the heir to throne of Lumatere (and Finnikin's old friend), is still alive, and that she can lead Finnikin to him.

Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta is my fourth read of five for YALSA's Backlist Bingo Reading Challenge and it fulfills the Top Ten BFYA from the last five years category. I've had a copy of this book sitting on my shelf for ages and this challenge finally gave me the excuse to finally dig into it. I've heard so many amazing things about this series that it was about time I finally read it. I can definitely say that it's a very addicting read and I was hooked by it right from the opening chapters. Marchetta's world-building is top notch and incredibly rich. It was an honor to get to know these wonderful characters - my favorite being Evanjalin from very early on regardless of what happens with her. Finnikin is a strong male lead, and Froi becomes quite the scene stealer.

Melina Marchetta's Finnikin of the Rock is a wonderful series opener and I'm really looking forward to continuing it with Froi of the Exiles. If you're a fan of YA epic fantasy and adventure this is an absolute must read, especially if you enjoyed The Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer A. Nielsen.

I read this novel from November 1 - 6, 2016 and my review is also on Goodreads.

  1. This is an excellent book! I'm glad you liked it. :) I think my favorite part was the world building.

  2. I'm so keen to read this! Especially with a worldbuilding rec, as I find in YA high fantasy it can be pretty shallow/poor (exhibit A: Throne of Glass). I guess Game of Thrones has ruined me for all other worldbuilding ... Anyway, Cait has recommended these books and I'm gunning for them!
