The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): Department Nineteen (Department 19 #1) by Will Hill

Welcome to The Friday 56, a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice.

These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

I'm also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.  The rules are pretty simple - you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires.  Don't forget to link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.

This week I'm spotlighting one of my upcoming reads, Department Nineteen (Department 19 #1) by Will Hill.  I picked this up a little while ago at a bargain outlet store for a couple of dollars.  It caught my eye right off the bat - I mean, Department 19 was founded by Van Helsing and other Dracula survivors to police the supernatural with the assistance of Frankenstein's Creature - sounds pretty good.  It reminds me of Shutter by Courtney Alameda, which I adored.  And, Emily @ Ink, Inc. is a big fan of this series.

November 3, 2007

Jamie Carpenter was watching TV in the living room when he heard the tires of his dad's car crunch across the gravel driveway much, much earlier than usual.  Jamie looked at the clock on the wall above the TV and frowned.  It was a quarter past six.  Julian Carpenter had never, to the best of Jamie's memory, arrived home from work before seven o'clock, and even that was only on special occasions like his mom's birthday or when Arsenal were playing in the Champions League.

56:

Jamie studied the crest as he did so.  A crown and portcullis sat above a wide circle, in which had been carved six flaming torches encircling a plain crucifix.  Beneath the circle three words of Latin words of Latin were etched into the wall.

  21. So, from the beginning piece, something is definitely amiss with Jamie's dad. Makes me wonder what. :)
