The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee

Welcome to The Friday 56, a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice.

These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

I'm also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.  The rules are pretty simple - you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires.  Don't forget to link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.

This week I am spotlighting my current read, Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee.  I really lucked out by getting my hands on this so early!  It was just released on the fourteenth, but I've already heard so much about it - specifically the portrayal of a certain beloved character.  For me this is a book I know I have to read because I loved To Kill A Mockingbird so much, but I'm not sure if I really want it for the same reason especially considering what I've heard.  I am on page 106 out of 278, and I think I'm just about to get right into the thick of it.

Book Beginning:

Since Atlanta, she had looked out the dining-car window with a delight almost physical.

56:

"You want to do something about it?" she asked politely, clenching her fists."

Jem said, "You can be Mr. Damon, Dill.  He's always funny and he saves everybody in the end.  You know, he always blesses everything."

"Bless my insurance policy," said Dill, hooking his thumbs through invisible suspenders.  "Oh all right."

  2. I'm torn about whether to read this or not. Afraid of it's impact, I guess. I'm sure I won't be able to resist for long though. LOL

  3. I'm not sure I want to read this one but I do love the excerpts. I can especially identify with the beginning and the delight with coming home!

  4. I might be one of the 1% of people who went through US schools who hasn't read To Kill a Mockingbird. I really think I have to read that one first. I'm spotlighting Silver Mirrors by A. A. Aguirre this week. Happy reading!

    1. What? There are so many classics I never read in school but that was actually one of them.

  5. I didn't read TKAM until the 50th anniversary, and have the hardcover edition, so naturally, I wanted this book, too. Mine came yesterday...and I almost spotlighted it today. But decided to go with another book.

I am looking forward to the book, and the controversy doesn't put me off. I will decide for myself if I love it, hate it, or feel nothing at all. LOL

Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

  8. I haven't decided whether to pick this one up or yet because of the controversy surrounding the release, but I do like the excerpt. Happy reading!

    1. I could definitely see what it became, but it's not To Kill A Mockingbird.

  9. I chose this book for this week, too. I'm at 53% but my 56 is from 40%, because that's a better quote!

  11. I have this book en route, as we speak. Can't wait for it to get here either.
    Happy weekend!

  12. Aw, I still can't decide whether to read this or not... I'm vaguely intrigued by, what could be a a very relevant, if depressing, examination of how sometimes good people who start out with good intentions are worn down by society. The circumstances are the publication still bother me, but I'll probably break down soon.

    1. That's what gets me too. It's one of those ones I knew I should read, but didn't know if I wanted to.

  13. The whole 56 thing looks like such a great idea! It should be good seeing what other people do too.

I think I'd probably read that book though, if I ever came into possession of it.

  15. I have such mixed feelings! I may have to leave this one for the next generation and be of the Mockingbird only generation.

Thanks for playing along with BBOF. I don't always stop by to leave comments, but I appreciate your participation!
