The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): These Vengeful Souls (These Vicious Masks #3) by Tarun Shanker & Kelly Zekas + 50/50 Friday
On Friday's I take part in three weekly link ups - The Friday 56, hosted by Freda's Voice, Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader, and 50/50 Friday is a new weekly link up and it is hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books. For The Friday 56, you choose a book, a book you have just finished, a book you are about to start, your current read, and share a line or a few lines that grab you (but don't spoil anything) from page 56 or 56% of the way through the ebook. Post it and share your post's url on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post. As for Book Beginnings, you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires, and then link up your post's url with Rose City Reader. Then, for 50/50 Friday, every week there's a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - you share a book that suits each category and link up on the hosts blogs.
This week I'm spotlighting one of my current reads, These Vengeful Souls (These Vicious Masks #3) by Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas. I absolutely love the first two books in this series and I'm both excited and scared to see how everything will turn out in this series finale - check out my reviews for book one and book two if you like. This series hooked me at the Jane Austen meets the X-Men concept and luckily it really delivers. Plus, if you like the Lady Helen series by Allison Goodman you'll probably like this series too.
Beginning:
The worst moment of my life was not the one in which one hundred and twenty-two people died to my selfishness and a monster's rage.
56:
Sebastian stepped just outside of the room as I put my hand onto Mr. Kent's metal one.
50/50 Friday: Favorite/ Least Favorite Read In May
Least Favorite - That Inevitable Victorian Thing by E.K. Johnston - I tried with this audiobook, but I ended up DNF'ing this story at about 15%. Unfortunately, the premise sounded better than the excution.
Favorite - The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth #1) by N.K. Jemisin - This choice was especially difficult this month because I read a few five star books this month (Children of Blood and Bone and Godsgrave were marvelous), but this series starter completely blew me away. I have no idea why I put if off for so long, but I do know that I need to get to the sequel stat.
Have you read any of these books? What are you reading this weekend? As always thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!
I love N. K. Jemisin's series, but I'm way behind catching up with the final book. I must find time for it soon😊
ReplyDeleteI'm on hold for book two on audiobook at the library. :)
DeleteI enjoyed These Vicious Masks but haven't had a chance to keep reading the rest of the series. One day, perhaps... This week I have the latest in the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes historical mystery series - Island of the Mad by Laurie R. King. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteIt's intense! Someday I'm going to have to start in on that series myself.
DeleteThanks for sharing!
If the worst day is worse than that beginning there are some seriously crazy things happening!
ReplyDeleteYeah, the end of book 2 was terrible in terms of what happens to our characters.
DeleteI'm so intrigued. It sounds like quite a read! Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteIt was awesome!
DeleteThanks, Freda!
I'm always looking for a new series. Sounds exciting.
ReplyDeleteMy Friday 56 from Air And Ash
You can say that again!
DeleteThanks for sharing, Laura.
Hope you find the finale as gripping as the earlier instalments.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, I did!
DeleteI'm looking away since I haven't read the final book in the series yet, but with the way the second ended, I can't figure out why I haven't. Hope you enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteI've finished it now and it was such an awesome grand finale! I wish it wasn't all over. :)
DeleteI love that opening for These Vengeful Souls! The protagonist doesn't sound perfectly "good", and I like that! I got That Inevitable Victorian Thing from the library, but I just haven't been too interested about it, especially after hearing some not-so-great things.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'd be interested to know what you think of TIVT if you start in on it.
DeleteI want to read both of your 50/50 friday picks! My library has one of them (Fifth Season) so I'll maybe read it soon.
ReplyDeleteYou definitely need to pick it up! Happy reading, Wren!
DeleteI'm sorry to hear you had to DNF That Inevitable Victorian Thing. It's so disappointing when a book doesn't live up to what it claims... Especially when the cover is so gorgeous! Thanks for linking up, Lauren!
ReplyDeleteLaura @BlueEyeBooks
I know, right. Ah well.
