SciFi Month 2025 - Sunday Funday: Week 1 Update

Happy Sunday everyone and welcome to my first weekly update for SciFi Month 2025!  SciFi Month is a month long celebration of all things sci-fi and it's hosted by Lisa @ Dear Geek Place, Imyril @ There's Always Room For One More, Annemieke @ A Dance With Books, and Mayri @ Book Forager (Image credit: Artwork by Yuriy Nedopekin).  So far, I'd say I've made pretty good progress on my tbr and I've started in on my watchlist as well.  Keep reading to see what I've been up to since this the beginning of the month:

My SciFi Month Posts This Week:

What I Watched This Week:

 ❋.5

I didn't know what to expect from Death Race 2000 (1975) at all, but I definitely was wasn't expecting so much nudity or head squishing. Maybe I was just thinking it would make more sense. Also, why would anyone in their right mind be anywhere near a road at the time of the race? Like that kid rolling his tire down the side of the road with a stick? Was he just stupid or did he have a death wish? Finally, I both rolled my eyes back in my head and laughed out loud at *hand* grenade thing.

My review is also on Letterboxd.

 ❋

Brick (2025) is a solid mystery, but I wish there was more of a puzzle to it.  It's a little too long and it drags a bit in certain places more than it ought to.  Matthias Schweighöfer carries the movie and easily gives the best performance of the cast.  His character Tim really goes through it!

 ❋

I liked the idea of Deep (2021), but the execution of it wasn't great. I'm really annoyed that that stalker Peach was allowed back in the friend group at the end like everything was perfectly fine at the end and he wasn't a creepy stalker.

My review is also on Letterboxd.

 ❋ ❋

It's good to be back for Travelers, Season 3 (2018) and this is the perfect month to jump back in.  So far I have watched the first 2 episodes of this season so far.  I really missed these characters.  I'd say Trevor and Philip are my favorites, and I'm quite nervous for David.  I can't wait to see how this series wraps up with this final season.

What I Read This Week:

 ❋

Extra Time (Doctor Who: Eleventh Doctor Adventures #10) by Richard Dungworth would probably be more fun if I was interested in soccer (or just sports generally speaking), but I did appreciate how this is still pretty accessible. Plus, I was able to look up some of the people in real life just to put names to some of the faces. Also, Rory is one of my favorite Doctor Who characters so it was nice to see him get a win.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

 ❋ ❋

I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyedOn Basilisk Station (Honor Harrington #1) by David Weber.  I don't often read military sci-fi, but this one really worked for me.  It really reminds me of a sci-fi take on Master and Commander.  Weber's style also made me think of Jack Campbell's The Lost Fleet series.  Anyway, I really liked Honor, but Nimitz stole the show for me personally.  I'll definitely be back for more of this series.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

 ❋ ❋

I'm glad I decided to continue with this series, especially on audiobook as the production is pretty great.  It's good to see the returning characters again.   I also didn't mind that the scale of it is a bit smaller here with Cibola Burn (The Expanse #4) by James S.A. Corey in comparison to previous installments.

my review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

Are you taking part in SciFi Month 2025?  Have you read or watched either of these?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!

  1. Death Race 2000 sounds hilariously bad, lol. Some day I will start The Expanse series😁

  2. I loved Travelers! Very underrated sci-fi show :) And Brick confused me for a moment, until I realised you didn't mean the Joseph Gordon-Levitt film!
