Happy Tuesday everyone! Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday which is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is Book Titles That Describe Me/My Life. I've decided to feature Books I Need To Read That Inspired Movie & TV Shows I Love. I usually like to read the book before I see the adaptation, but that's not always the case. The movie and tv shows link back to their title pages on Letterboxd and Serialized. Anyway, all of these movies and shows are adaptations that I've really loved and would like to try the source material to see how it compares (for better or worse). Without further ado, here we go by book title:
Broken by Don Winslow - I saw Crime 101 with Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry at the movie theater and was a lot more invested than I was expecting to be. I'll have to check out the novella that inspired it in this collection of shorts.
The Devil's Advocate by Andrew Neiderman - The 1997 horror movie had a bit of everything and Al Pacino seems like he was having a heck of a time playing the devil. I wonder how the book compares?
Except the Dying (Detective Murdoch #1) by Maureen Jennings - In the last year, I've started into the Murdoch Mysteries tv series and it is so much fun. I love all of the characters so much. I just recently found out that it's inspired by a book series so now I'll have to read those as well.
I Am Not Okay With This by Charles Forman - I loved I Am Not Okay With This on Netflix and was really disappointed when it was cancelled after only one season. If only it had more episodes.
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan - The movie adaptation was outstanding and I need to read the book and probably cry all over again.
The Keeper of Lost Causes (Department Q #1) by Jussi Alder-Olsen - I didn't realize the tv series Dept. Q on Netflix was based on anything let alone a Danish crime mystery thriller series. I'm going to have to tide myself over for season 2 of the show with these books.
The Power of the Dog by Thomas Savage - The movie adaptation really impressive and I appreciated that it wasn't quite what I was expecting. It makes me wonder how the original novel will turn out.
The Ritual by Adam L.G. Nevill - I had no expectations for the 2017 movie, but ended up being absolutely hooked by its brand folk horror. I can't wait to be petrified all over again by the novel that inspired it.
The Terror by Dan Simmons - The first season of The Terror adapts this book. I wasn't at all familiar with it before going it, but it was amazing and I need more and the book is 835 pages long.
Why Didn't They Ask Evans? by Agatha Christie - I stumbled on this 2022 miniseries adaptation of an Agatha Christie story I wasn't at all familiar with going in. I've been on a bit of an Agatha Christie kick lately and I ended up liking this a lot more than I was expecting, so now I want to try the novel.
Have you read any of these books or watched any of these adaptations? As always, thanks very much for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!

May you enjoy them all!

DeleteWhat a fantastic list idea for Top Ten Tuesday! I love how this theme bridges the gap between books and screen adaptations—it’s always so exciting to discover the original stories behind movies and TV shows we already enjoy. There’s something really special about seeing how a book’s details and depth translate (or sometimes differ!) on screen, and it often makes me even more curious to read the source material. This is such a fun and relatable prompt for any book lover who also enjoys binge-worthy shows and great films!

It'll be interesting to see how they translate!
DeleteI adored The Terror (the book) but havent seen the show. I would definitely try it!
ReplyDeleteThe show was excellent. You know, I was watching the adaptation of Half Bad by Sally Green on Netflix the other day and I couldn't help but think that Paul Ready's character in that series would be such a disappointment to Dr. Goodsir, his character in The Terror! :D
DeleteGreat topic! I didn't know Dept Q was based on a book -- I haven't watched it yet, but it's in my queue. I thought the TV version of The Terror was amazing and actually grabbed a used copy of the book... then decided I was fine leaving this one unread (mainly because of the length). The Joy Luck Club is definitely worth reading!
ReplyDeleteThe Terror is a long one... I just have to know how it compares to the show given how good the show was. :)
DeleteI’ve read a couple of the Dept Q series and I watched the tv adaption and enjoyed both. I loved reading The Joy Luck Club but I’ve never seen the movie adaption.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your thoughts
Good to know! Thanks for coming over, Shelleyrae.
DeleteThis a great take on this prompt! I hope you enjoy every book as you dive into it!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteDepartment Q was a really good watch. I'm not sure I'd enjoy it as much as a book though...?
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. There are some tv shows I love watching that are based on books, but have no interest in the original novels. :)
DeleteI am a huge Murdoch Mysteries TV series fan as well but I haven't read any of the books.
ReplyDeleteIt's so good! :)
DeleteI don't watch much tv or movies, really, so I'm not familiar with most of these. I'm usually disappointed in tv/movie adaptations, but I recently saw Project Hail Mary and loved it, just like I did the book. Sometimes, Hollywood gets it right. Yay!
ReplyDeleteHappy TTT!
Yes, Project Hail Mary was amazing! :)
DeleteIt is shocking to confess -- I've never read The Joy Luck Club.
ReplyDeleteI think it will be good!
DeleteI love Murdoch! I have only watched the tv show though.
ReplyDeleteI need to get caught up on it - and I need to watch it in order too. :)
DeleteGreat list. I'm never sure if it's better to read the book before or after seeing the movie.
ReplyDeleteI like them both ways. :)
