The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): Down with the Shine by Kate Karyus Quinn

Welcome to The Friday 56, a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice.

These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

I'm also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.  The rules are pretty simple - you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires.  Don't forget to link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.

This week I'm spotlighting one of my current reads, Down with the Shine by Kate Karyus Quinn.  I've only made it through the prologue so far, but I've certainly been hooked by those opening pages and the premise behind the story sounds excellent - moonshine that grants twisted wishes, yes please!  Here's to hoping the rest of the novel holds up!

Beginning:

"I gave you my name for a reason, Lennie.  It might not be worth much now, but someday real soon, I'm going to make it so Cash is a name nobody ever forgets.  I'm serious, Lennie.  People are gonna remember us."

56:

"If your father were here, he'd roll out the red carpet and gilded cage.  And if he knew that in his absence you'd been treated with anything but the best, well, he'd kill me."  The man titters nervously.  "I'm joking.  Probably.  I hope.  Right?"

  4. I DNF'ed this book fairly quickly, but it may not have been entirely fair for me to put it down. I just was interested in other, flashier titles.

    1. It definitely has those elements, but I wouldn't call it a comedy exactly. Thanks for coming over, Cait!

  15. This sounds like an interesting book. Anything with daddies coming to the rescue of their mistreated child (young or adult) sounds good.
