The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic #2) by V.E. Schwab + 50/50 Friday

Welcome to The Friday 56, a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice.

These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

I'm also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.  The rules are pretty simple - you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires.  Don't forget to link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.

This week I'm spotlighting one of my current reads, A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic #2) by V.E. Schwab.  I'm so excited to read this and I have no clue why I've put it off for so long!  The first book in the series, A Darker Shade of Magic, was one of my favorite reads of 2015, so to say I'm excited for this is a bit of an understatement!  I'm ready for more of Kell and Lilah!

Beginning:

The Arnesian Sea

Delilah Bard had a way of finding trouble.

She'd always thought it was better than letting trouble find her, but floating in the ocean in a two-person skiff with no oars, no view of land, and no real resources save the ropes binding her wrists, she was beginning to reconsider.

56:

Kell stared into the shadows beyond the circle, imagining a flutter of cloak, a glint of steel.

You've never had to be strong.

The torchlight wavered, and Kell inhaled, exhaled, and struck.

This week I'm also taking part in a brand new linkup called 50/50 Friday, which is hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books.  Every week they'll have a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - this week the topic is Character most/ least like yourself.

Most:

Matilda from Matilda by Roald Dahl - But, you know, older and without the telekinesis.

Least:

Adelina Amouteru from The Young Elites series by Marie Lu - One of the most darkly fascinating YA characters I've read, and I'm glad to say she isn't like me.  I'm still waiting for book three to arrive on audio and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all ends!

  7. I keep only hearing good things about this series, but as I was kind of let down by her other really popular series, The Archived (I only read the first book and found it dull), I have been reluctant to read this series. I might borrow it from the library.

  8. Yesss to everything Kell. And Lilah. And just Schwabness, hahaha. You have good timing, because now you don't have to wait too long for the third and last installment. A Conjuring of Light comes out in a little over a month :D

  11. I still need to get to A Gathering of Shadows but it's been so long since I read ADSOM that I'm considering rereading. Do you think it's worth it? Also, I think I'm the only person who hasn't seen/read Matilda and only found out like last week that she has telekinesis? LOL I really need to get on that as well.

    1. I didn't reread, but as soon as I started it all started to come back once I stated to get back into the swing of it! :)

What?! You've never read or watched Matilda - you have to get on that!

  13. A Gathering of Shadows has such a pretty cover omg I'd want to read it from that alone. I'm glad that A Darker Shade of Music was a good book, they do both look pretty brilliant.

  14. I often put off reading a second book in a series. I think I am often afraid that it will not live put to the first book and I will be disappointed.

  15. I totally haven't read that series yet. I'm looking forward to it. I keep hearing good stuff about it. Enjoy!

  16. Yay, you're reading it! I'm thinking of doing a quick reread of the first two books before the final one comes out. I'm so stoked!

  19. Adelina Amouteru is a dark character, I'm glad you're not like her other! It's awesome to see the story from the dark side though and through that series, sometimes it's hard to not hope things work out for her.
