Wyrd & Wonder 2025 - Sunday Funday: Week 2 Update

Happy Sunday Funday  and welcome to my second weekly update for Wyrd & Wonder! Wyrd & Wonder 2025 is a month long celebration of all things fantasy co-hosted by Lisa @ Dear Geek Place, imyril @ There’s Always Room For One More, Ariana @ The Book Nook, Annemieke @ A Dance With Books, and Jorie @ Jorie Loves A Story (artwork by Yuri Arcurs Photography).  Now, since I've got a full week to work with we're back to a regular schedule here.  I've really been enjoying myself with this challenge this month.  Keep reading to see what I've gotten up to since this monthly since my last update:

What I've Watched So Far:

I didn't realize Freaky Friday (1976) existed until much more recently and I'm glad I finally decided to it out. I will say I definitely preferred the 2003 adaptation. Max the basset hound is an extremely good dog who puts up with a lot. It was very weird seeing Gomez Addams without a mustache, and that "daddy" stuff was really unexpected. Biggest pleasant surprise though was the switch back to "right body, wrong place."

Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941) is one of my favorite movies, so I was a bit nervous when it came time to check out its remake, Heaven Can Wait (1978).  It turns out though I loved this one just as much and that really surprised me.  It makes some changes that for the most part really work for it, especially those black comedy elements. James Mason makes for a great choice for Mr. Jordan.  By the way, even though I expected it, I was still all choked up by that ending.

I honestly liked The Age of Adeline (2015) more than I was expecting to. It has its issues like too much voiceover narration and Ellis coming across as to creepy and a bit of a stalker, but both Blake Lively and Harrison Ford both help make up the difference. I will saw with no question in my mind that Ford's William is a far superior love interested. Sorry to Michael Huisman.

Troll Hunter (2010) was a little too long, but still a fun, found footage ride. Hans was easily my favorite character of the whole group.  If you've liked André Øvredal's atmospheric style from his other films like The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016), Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019), and The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023), you might want to check this out too.

What I've Read So Far:

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit (Moribito #1) by Nahoko Uehashi is a new favorite.  I'm so glad I decided to read this.  This was exactly the kind of adventure fantasy I needed.  Now I need to read the rest of the series, watch the anime, and the live-action series.  Thank you to my fellow Postcrosser for putting this on my radar!

Immortal by Sue Lynn Tan is probably my least favorite book set in the world of Daughter of the Moon Goddess world. That said, it was still great to be back. I love the world building and the writing style as well as our leading character Liyen. I also liked reading about the fantasy political intrigue. What didn't really work for me though was the romance with the God of War. Overall, this was still a great return to the world regardless of that and I'm looking forward to reading whatever Sue Lynn Tan writes next.
