The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): Smoke Gets In Your Eyes: And Other Lessons From The Crematory by Caitlin Doughty + 50/50 Friday

On Friday's I take part in three weekly link ups - The Friday 56, hosted by Freda's Voice, Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader, and 50/50 Friday is a new weekly link up and it is hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books. For The Friday 56, you choose a book, a book you have just finished, a book you are about to start, your current read, and share a line or a few lines that grab you (but don't spoil anything) from page 56 or 56% of the way through the ebook. Post it and share your post's url on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post. As for Book Beginnings, you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires, and then link up your post's url with Rose City Reader. Then, for 50/50 Friday, every week there's a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - you share a book that suits each category and link up on the hosts blogs.

This week I'm spotlighting one of my current reads that will fulfill the book about nature task for Book Riot's 2018 Read Harder Challenge, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes: & Other Lessons From The Crematory by Caitlin Doughty which will fulfill the task to read a book of social science.  If you've ever watched Doughty's Ask A Mortician channel on YouTube, then you'll know why I've been meaning to try her first book.

Beginning:

A girl always remembers the first corpse she shaves.

56:

As I slid Jacob into the flames, the only things I knew about him were that he was a twenty-two-year-old from Washington who studied Chinese and was perhaps, at least on the day he  died, interested in cannibalism.

50/50 Friday: Best/ Worst Read In June

Worst - Still Life (Chief Inspector Armand Gamanche #1) by Louise Penny - This mystery series is super popular at my library and since it's been recommended to me many times I thought I'd give it a try on audiobook.  Unfortunately, the of this cozy just wasn't for me.  I actually DNF'd it at 25% - I couldn't get Agatha Christie and Poirot.

Best - The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue (Guide #1) by Mackenzi Lee - I read this this novel as a part of my #PrideTBR for June and I loved it!  I can't wait for the sequel - Felicity is totally the MVP of book one so I can't wait for the sequel to focus on her story.  I don't know why I put this off for so long.

What are you reading this week?  Have you read any of these books?  As always thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps commenting down below!

  1. I like that title...but then when I realized it was about a crematory, I cringed a little bit. LOL.

  13. I really enjoyed your featured book for BBOF and The Friday 56. Probably not one I would read as a priority, I shall definitely keep this one in mind for the future.

I am not one to shy away from discussing death, both my own and other peoples', which sets me at odds with most friends and family. I truly believe that everyone should plan their own eventual funeral, as one thing is for certain in this life ... Not one of us is getting out alive!

I still have 'Still Life' on my Goodreads 'Want To Read' shelf, as it is the first book in a series which has been recommended to me, so many times. I am sorry that it didn't do anything for you, but that's the great thing about having blogging friends you can talk to honestly and with so many places to go for free or inexpensive books, you don't really lose anything by trying something new from time to time!

Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend :)

  17. I started Gentleman’s Guide last night. I was only going to read 1 chapter before bed, but I ended up staying awake until 2 in the morning to read. I love it so far. I read Smoke Gets in Your Eyes last year. I liked that one, too.
