Devour Your TBR - ContemporApril Wrap Up & Moody May TBR

Happy Thursday everyone!  This year I've decided to take part in Devour Your TBR which is hosted by Kathy @ Books and Munches and destiny.  Each month the Goodreads Group for the challenge dedicated to knocking out our ever growing TBRs comes up with a themed challenge.  For April the theme was ContemporApril (all about adult or YA contemporary novels) and I selected six books which you can see in the photo above.  Keep reading to see my thoughts on the books in the order that I read them, and also my potential TBR for Moody May (all about mood reading).

❋ ❋

All the Rage by Courtney Summers is one of the rawest novels I've read in a long time.  It tackles intense and dark topics, but it is more than worth your time.  Courtney Summers' writing is very natural and flows well.  On top of everything else, I also appreciated the core mystery.  A fair warning, you may need a stress ball to squeeze and a paper bag to breathe into during your read and after you complete it.  Now, I know I need to read Sadie.

I read this novel on April 18, 2019 and my review is also on Goodreads.

❋ ❋

I don't know why I put off Allegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson. It's an incredibly powerful read and it's totally messed up. It's painful and enraging in the best ways. Well, not for Mary I mean. The hand she's been dealt is truly horrible and unfair. Jackson's writing while on the slower side it is quite engrossing, addicting, and difficult. You won't want to miss a second of it. I need to read more from this author.

I read this novel from April 19 - 23, 2019 and my review is also on Goodreads.

❋ ❋

Ten Things I Hate About Me by Randa Abdel-Fattah is my second book by Randa Abdel-Fattah and I can easily say that I preferred this novel to Does My Head Look Big In This. Yes, Jamie/ Jamilah is kind of annoying and self-centered but it's intriguing to follow her journey of self discovery and acceptance.  I appreciated that she sounds just like a regular fifteen year old.  I'm not from Australia and I'm not that familiar with the situations that are covered here, so I'm sure I missed some of the nuances.  Honestly, I think I could have appreciated Jamilah more if I had read this when I was much younger.

I read this novel on April 6, 2019 and my review is also on Goodreads.

❋ ❋

I'm so glad I decided to read more from Nina LaCour after reading Everything Leads To You.  I've only read two books from her now, but she's up there with my favorite YA contemporary authors like Becky Albertalli, Rainbow Rowell, John Green, David Levithan, and Adam Silvera.  We Are Okay by Nina LaCour features a structure that jumps back and forth in time which makes you want to learn more about the characters and their story.  Even though it's short it was quite easy to get attached to the cast.  It's  gut wrenching in the best ways.  I totally needed a tissue after that - and much more from LaCour.

I read this novel on April 1, 2019 and my review is also on Goodreads.

❋ ❋

What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera is an absolute must-read YA contemporary novel.  Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera certainly make a fantastic writing team.  I loved getting to know Arthur and Ben as well as the side characters.  They all really hop of the page, don't they.  As much as I enjoyed the story, it's a bit too much of a romance for my tastes.  I don't know if Arthur and Ben would have staying power as a couple all things considered.  Maybe it's just me, but Arthur is a bit too *much*.  If we met in real life, he would probably grate on my nerves pretty quickly.  Ben, though, is another story - I don't say things like this often, but he's so stinking adorable.  Overall, this novel is a pretty great collaboration.  If you're a fan of these incredibly talented authors I have a feeling you'll love it.  I can't wait to read more from either of them in the future.

I read this novel on April 11, 2019 and my review is also on Goodreads.

❋ ❋

100 Sideways Miles is my least favorite of Andrew Smith's books that I've read so far. I enjoy the author's off-the-wall writing style, and if you're a fan of his I still recommend picking it up. Fair warning: Cade is incredibly irritating. Finn though definitely grows on you, if you give him the chance.

I read this novel from April 15 - 17, 2019 and my review is also on Goodreads.

My Potential Moody May TBR:

The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy #1) by S.A. Chakraborty - I've been looking forward to this for ages and I need to finally pick it up.

The Kingdom of Copper (The Daevabad Trilogy #2) by S.A. Chakraborty - I can't wait to dive into the sequel right after I finish book one.

The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (The Hundred-Year-Old Man #1) by Jonas Jonasson - This is actually one of my Read Harder Challenge books, but it sounds like it will be perfect for the month of May.

The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes by Adrian Conan Doyle and John Dickson Carr - Honestly, I'm always in the mood for Sherlock Holmes.

The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2) by Holly Black- This is going to awesome!

The Poppy War (The Poppy War #1) by R.F. Kuang - I've heard so many great things about this one and I can't wait to read it.

Everless (Everless #1) by Sara Holland - I love the sound of the premise for this series opener.

Sherlock Holmes: My Life and Crimes by Michael Hardwick - Like I said, I'm always in the mood for Holmes.

Congrats if you've made it this far!  Have you read any of these books?  If so, what did you think of them?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!

  2. Allegedly had me WTFing a whole lot. That was a crazy trip! I think 100 Sideways Miles was my lowest rated Smith book (3.5), but I remember really appreciated the friendship in that book.

  3. You convinced me to join Devour Your TBR last month so I got to join in on the contemporary books this month! I'm not sure what I'll read for May because I honestly have no idea what kind of books I am in the mood for lately. Allegedly, What If It's Us, and 100 Miles are all books I've been meaning to read. Someday I'll get to them.
