SciFi Month 2025 - Sunday Funday: Week 4 Update

Happy Sunday everyone and welcome to my fourth and weekly update for SciFi Month 2025!  SciFi Month is a month long celebration of all things sci-fi and it's hosted by Lisa @ Dear Geek Place, Imyril @ There's Always Room For One More, Annemieke @ A Dance With Books, and Mayri @ Book Forager (Image credit: Artwork by Yuriy Nedopekin).  I can't believe we're already at the end of the month - it's been fun one! Anyway, keep reading to see what I've been up to since this time last week:

My SciFi Month Posts This Week:

What I Watched This Week:

 ❋ ❋ ❋

Lost in Starlight (2025) is amazing. I'm not a romance movie person at all, but this was sweet. The sci-fi and music elements fit right in with the story.  Plus, the animation looks outstanding and the leading cast have great voices. I would very much like more movies like this please and thank you.

My review is also on Letterboxd.

 ❋ ❋

Tron (1982) is so weird but I got a kick out of it. It's interesting seeing stuff with effects like this considering it's pre-internet. My favorite character, if you could call it that, is Bit.

My review is also on Letterboxd.

 ❋

Upload, Season 4 (2025) at least gets to wrap up the storyline. Unfortunately, it just doesn't have what the previous seasons had.  It was more disappointing and annoying than it should have been.  I really liked Nora originally, but for four episodes I realized I didn't care where her storyline was going. Plus, there were a few times that I felt like I was just waiting for the characters to finish playing catch up.  Also, poor AI guy(s) - what the heck! Same goes for Luke, too. Dang it!

 ❋
Doctor Who - Season 13: Flux (2021), Eve of the Daleks, Legend of the Sea Devils, & The Power of the Doctor (2022) - I'm making more progress on getting caught up on the series.  Overall, it was hit and miss.  Some elements of Season 13 and those 3 specials I really liked and others not so much.  My favorite thing about them overall was easily Dan Lewis.  He doesn't always get a lot to do, but he's just a good, kind, and cool guy.  I really appreciated that he's open, adapts quickly, and is supportive.  He's goes through a lot though in a short amount of time and I totally get why he makes the decision to leave.  I wasn't at all familiar with John Bishop going in either.  My favorite episodes of what I have watched were easily Season 13 Episode 2 "War of the Sontarans" (they look a more like little bruised lumpy potatoes than ever), Season 13 Episode 4 "Village of the Angels" (the Weeping Angels are still some of my favorite villains from the series), "Eve of the Daleks," and "The Power of the Doctor" (it was good to see Graham again and I think he had a great idea).  As for Jodie Whittaker, I liked her as the Doctor, but the writing behind the scenes just wasn't always there to back everything up when it comes to characterizations, dialogue, and storylines across the board.  One of the things that disappointed me this season was the relationship with Yaz always getting pushed to the back.  That said, I'm glad Dan was there and supportive of Yaz.  I just wish it didn't have to end like that for her even if it was good to see her further develop her skills.  Biggest casting surprise to me was finally realizing that Jacob Anderson was playing Vinder somewhere around the halfway mark of Season 13.  I know I've seen him in quite a few things over the years, but I still mainly associate him with his role as Louis in the Interview with the Vampire tv series.  That reminds me: I can't wait until season 3 of that series/ The Vampire Lestat!

What I Read This Week:

 ❋ ❋
Okay, Titan of the Stars (Titan of the Stars #1) by E.K. Johnston was a fun one. I'm a fan of both Aliens and Titanic and I got a kick out of where this went. It wasn't as good as either since that would be a tall order. That said I still had a good time. I'll have to check out future books in this series.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

 ❋ ❋ ❋
Thronebreakers (Crownchasers #1) by Rebecca Coffindaffer is an outstanding finale to this duology. I thought I loved book one, but this ramped it all up even more.  It honestly makes me wish I had more stars to give it.  If you haven't read this sci-fi duology and you're a fan of Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, I can't recommend it enough.  I listened to this installment on audiobook and Reba Buhr did such a good job of bringing it all to life.  I can't wait to read more from this author in the future.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

 ❋ ❋
Cyctonic (Skyward #3) by Brandon Sanderson is my least favorite installment of the series, but it was still pretty great (given the previous installments got five stars each from me). M-Bot is still a favorite character. The twists are something else, aren't they? I'm really looking forward to book four.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

 ❋
The Memory Index (Memory Index #1) by Julian C. Vaca is a solid YA sci-fi alternate history dystopian story. It has a unique concept and an interesting cast of characters with Freya being the one to watch. I just wish it didn't feel like it was trying so hard to remind you at every turn that it's set in 1987. I also wish that it didn't wrap up quite as easily as it does. Anyway, as interesting as it all was I don't think I'm interested enough to come back for book two.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.
