The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): City of Savages by Lee Kelly

Welcome to The Friday 56, a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice.

These are the rules:

1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

I'm also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.  The rules are pretty simple - you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires.  Don't forget to link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.

This week I'm spotlighting the book I've just started, City of Savages by Lee Kelly.  It just came in for me at the library - a lot sooner than I expected, might I add.  I've had my eye  on this for quite a while and I hope it is as good as it sounds!

Book Beginnings:

Through our wall of windows, I watch dawn stand up and take on the city.  It throws a thick, molten net over the skyscrapers, sets the river on fire, and makes me restless to be outside.  It's our last day downtown, and I want to enjoy every second of it.

56:

"TIME!" Clara says, pushing us to opposite corners.

I look at Cass's arm, a cut the size of a finger lacing blood around her forearm.  I did that.  I exhale.  Wipe my lip, wipe my brow, readjust my helmet.  I did that.

  4. The beginning is fascinating and I'm really curious about that 56. Does not sound like a great situation! I can't tell if she's proud or horrified.

  6. Lovely visual in the beginning and I'm curious if she's shocked or elated at what she did. And what is she doing?

Love the cover too. The title is quite good as well.

I am wondering why this will be the last day downtown.
