Welcome to my first Music Monday post of Sci-Fi Month 2019 (Image credit: Photo by Sebastien Decoret on 123RF.com with a quote from This Is How You Lose The Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone)!  This week I'm spotlighting the first song featured in The Phantom Empire (1935) a 12 part western sci-fi film serial featuring none other than a young Gene Autry in his first starring role.  I actually first heard about this while watching the segment on Gene Autry on Ken Burns's Country Music documentary series.  I lucked out and found a dvd copy via interlibrary loan and it was a lot of fun to watch.  In this serial, Autry plays a version of himself who stumbles upon the highly advanced underground society of Murania - ray guns, communicators, tv, robots, you name it.  The surface level entrance to it is hidden on Autry's Radio Ranch where he and his band perform his daily radio show at 2pm everyday.  Needless to say, some unscrupulous criminals on the surface are willing to do whatever it takes steal Murania's wealth in radium.  Essentially Gene Autry finds himself trying to prevent all out war between Murania and the surface.  Plus, he can't miss an episode of his live daily radio show without it being shutdown for good by those unscrupulous people.  It's one of things that doesn't sound like it should work, but it totally does.  Check out the first episode below called "The Singing Cowboy"- it's set up to begin playing at the first song that they perform, "Uncle Noah's Ark".
