Read Around the World Challenge: Europe - July Update

Happy Wednesday everyone!  Today, I'm sharing my seventh update and mini reviews for the Read Around the World Challenge.  Of the 46 books for the 46 European countries on my original tbr, I managed to complete 5 in July for a total of 33 completed so far.  You can check out my profile here on the challenge website here.  Keep reading to see my thoughts on the books I read this month:

 ❋
A Death in Malta: An Assassination and a Family's Quest for Justice by Paul Caruana Galizia had been on my radar for quite awhile.  I knew this was a recent case, but for some reason I had it stuck in my head that it from a long time ago. What they went through is horrifying.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

The premise of Blackout (Blackout #1) by Marc Elsberg sounded interesting, but it just fell off for me midway through.  It's marketed as a thriller, but I wouldn't quite consider it that at all.  It just wasn't what I was hoping for from the summary.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

 ❋
Memoirs of a Wartime Interpreter: From the Battle of Moscow to Hitler's Bunker by Elena Rzhevskaya is a fascinating memoir.  I didn't know about her going into the book, but I'm glad we have her account about the bunker.  Wow!  The only reason I'm rating this only three stars is because copy I borrowed from the library had some printing errors.  It was randomly missing a page or two here and there throughout and that the entire index (which is listed in the table of contents) just wasn't there either.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

 ❋
Crossing by Pajtim Statovci is a historical fiction queer novel that I feel like I needed more context when it came to the setting and time period of the story.  While I liked Bujar's story as an unreliable narrator, I was just a little too out of the loop with everything else to really get invested in the whole thing.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

 ❋ ❋
The Shamer's Daughter (The Shamer Chronicles #1) by Lene Kaaberbol is absolutely a new favorite young YA fantasy of mine.  The fantasy element of this is really cool.  I wish I had read this years ago.  Heck, I wish it was even on my radar back when it was new.  I hope I can read book two, The Shamer's Signet, soon!

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.
