Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Didn't Live Up To The Hype

Happy Tuesday everyone!  Welcome to the Top Ten Tuesday now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.  This week's topic is Unpopular Bookish Opinions (submitted by Kaitlin Galvan @ Somehow I Manage Blog).  I'm focusing specifically on books that didn't live up to the hype.  Here we go, in alphabetical order by title:

The Awakening (The Vampire Diaries #1) by L.J. Smith - I've enjoyed what I've seen of the tv series, not so much here though.

Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman - I hate to say it, but while I liked the book well enough I greatly preferred the movie adaptation.

The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid - Good, but it just never quite lived up to all of the hype surrounding the book.

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Page - I liked the concept, but the overall execution and the ending just didn't live up to my expectations.

Fallen by Lauren Kate - I think I just totally missed the memo on this one.

Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes - I so wanted to love this one, but it just didn't work out for me.

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick - I read this due to the hype, but I just didn't get the appeal.

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken - This was one of my most anticipated books when it came out.  I liked the premise, but it never quite lived up to my expectations.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi - Honestly, I think I missed the memo on this one as well.

There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins - This was marketed as YA Horror so I was hyped up for it, but as it turned out it wasn't that at all - talk about disappointment.

  1. I know what you mean about being disappointed by books that got a lot of hype. Marie Lu books were that for me. Everyone loved them and talked about them all the time. I couldn't stand the writing. So not for me. My TTT Bookish Opinions

    1. I wasn't as much of a fan of the Legend series but I loved The Young Elites series from her. To each their own.

  2. I did like the Fallen series. I was all about paranormals back when I read it, and the epic romance just worked for me. I read the early ARC of Passenger and enjoyed it a lot. The sequel was not as solid for me, but I still enjoyed the duology overall.

  3. I've seen a couple of these on other posts for this meme that did the same thing.

  4. Great list! I've seen that a lot about There's Someone Inside Your House - I think the marketing team have a lot to answer for with that one!

  8. I've not read any of these, but I got put off Dorothy Must Die by how terrible one of the author's other books was!

  10. Fallen is legitimately the worst YA book I have ever read. Kind of bummed that Falling Kingdoms didn't grab you, but I get it. Hush, Hush is my favorite terrible series. There's a campy enjoyment to it.

  11. Fallen has a nice cover, but seems like I've seen other bloggers be a little disappointed with that series too. Falling Kingdoms is another series that looked good, but I never did get to those.

  12. I felt the same way about Falling Kingdoms. It was just ... okay to me? I actually bought the whole series at a conference because I was SO positive I was going to love it. LOL! They're all signed (and possibly personalized---I don't remember for sure). One of these days, I'll read more of the series and hope it captures my imagination more.

  14. I haven’t read most of these, but I have read The Diabolic. I am also guilty of giving it five stars and thinking it was a breath of fresh air in YA at the time.

I’m sorry it didn’t live up to the hype though! I also read the second book and that one wasn’t quite as good.

  15. Ugh, There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins... I agree.
