Top Ten Tuesday: Books for My Younger Self

Happy Tuesday everyone!  Welcome to the Top Ten Tuesday now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.  This week's topic is Books for My Younger Self.  I'm in my 30s and I read quite a bit of YA and every so often I'll come across one that I desperately wish I had read back when I was actually in high school.  Most all of the books on my list have been released since then, but a few here I wish I had known about back then.  Here we go, in alphabetical order by title:

Have you read any of these books?  What books do you wish you could have read back when you were in high school?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!

  1. I finally read Jenn's 'Alex' a while back and did think it was cute. :)

    1. Just seeing a teen who loves classic movies was enough for me!

  2. Great list. I come across a fair amount of YA titles that I too think would have been nice to have around in high school! Alex Approximately I've heard really good things about.

  3. The Book Thief would have been right up my alley as a teenager!

  4. The Perks Of Being A Wallflower is so good! I don't think my younger self would quite have 'got it' the way I do now. I just bought the Anniversary Edition that has an extra letter from Charlie years later, so instead of skipping to that I'm going to re-read the whole book so I can enjoy it more.

    1. I know what you mean, but still wish I had the chance back then anyways.

  5. When I was in high school there wasn't much YA to choose from. I was reading nothing but adult books by then. Teens have so many more choices these days!

    1. I read a lot of adult stuff too. Glad there are so many more options now.

  6. I loved The Book Thief, one of my favourite books, I think I was 15, maybe 16 when I read it. I really wish I'd read Inkheart when I was younger, my sister even had it, I really don't know why I didn't borrow it from her. I have my own copy now though, so I'm definitely planning on reading it at some point in the future.

  8. I would have loved Alex, Approximately as a high schooler, too. Nice picks.

  9. I feel like The Hate U Give reads like something I would have read in my youth. It has that kind of vibe to it. Great list!

Here's my Top Ten Tuesday post.

  10. Dairy Queen is one of my favorite TTT finds. I wasn't pleasure reading when it came out, so I missed it, but it kept popping up on so many TTT lists. I loved that family so much.

  12. I've read The Book Thief, Ms. Marvel, and Simon vs., and I enjoyed them all. Simon was my favorite out of that list. I stayed up late to finish it on a work night.

  15. I love THUG but I don't think I could ever read it again. It was too emotional and raw for me, but it was super great to see and I think it's an amazing book!

    1. I know what you mean. If only if I'd read it for the first time when I was younger.

  16. I was lucky enough to read The Book Thief and Perks as a teen.

  17. Ahh, Dairy Queen. I read that in college and got a kick out of it. I did love Inkheart when I read it as an adult, but I think I would have loved it as a kid too, if it had been around.

I definitely wish I could have discovered T.H.U.G. in the same kind of "what is a book hype" vacuum I had in high school. I also think my response to it would have been very different as a relatively uninformed and info-absorbent teen vs. an adult who's been listening to racism conversations for half my life now, and viewing it through a filter of how well it supports the expected objective and discussion points. I'm glad it exists for current teens, though.

  18. I still haven't read The Book Thief yet, but I wish younger me had known about it, because I can almost guarantee you she would've loved it! The Hate U Give would've been a game-changer for younger me, I'm sure. I didn't get to read a lot of books with Black girls, even though I desperately wanted them. Love your list!
