Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Movie First Time Watches Of 2021 Released 2020 & Before

Happy Tuesday everyone!  Welcome to the Top Ten Tuesday now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.  Today is a freebie, so I've decided to share my Favorite Movie First Time Watches Of 2021 Released 2020 & Before.  Without further ado, here we go in alphabetical order by release date.  The titles are linked to my Letterboxd reviews and I've included a trailer to go with each movie.

Brief Encounter (1945) - I wouldn't consider this in my wheelhouse, but this British movie absolutely hooked me.  The performances are absolutely outstanding.  Also, I can't imagine this movie being made at the same time period in the U.S. especially with the way it ends.

A Matter of Life and Death (1946) - The cinematography and special effects in this are so cool.  The movie is in both black and white (the afterlife) and color (the living world) and the transitions between look awesome.  Also I'm pretty sure this is David Niven's best performance.  By the way, you know that giant staircase in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey?  It's inspired by this movie!

Diabolique (1955) - This wasn't directed by Alfred Hitchcock, but it feels like one of his best movies.  The suspense is off the charts and that twist ending is something else!

Purple Noon (1960) - This is a French adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith starring Alain Delon and it was just impossibly cool.  I've never seen the Matt Damon adaptation, but there's no way it could come close to touching this.

Yojimbo (1961) - I loved the action and sense of humor in this classic Akira Kurosawa movie that was later adapted into Sergio Leone's A Fist Full of Dollars.  Also this has the best example of never bring a knife/ sword to a gun fight I've ever seen.

How to Steal a Million (1966) - I had no idea how much I needed to see Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole in a heist movie.  This was just priceless.  By the way, this Boomerang video really gets the tone down so well and the editing is excellent.

Moon (2009) - So far, I'd say that this is Sam Rockwell's best performance and it's basically a one man show.  I wish I had seen this back when it was new.

Boy (2010) - Taika Waititi is one of my favorite director's and I'm glad I finally got around to this earlier movie.  It has so much heart.  If you decide to give this a try, you have to stick around for that Thriller Haka set to the song Poi-E by Patea Maori Club.  That almost made me feel patriotic for a country I've never even had the chance to visit.

Hell or High Water (2016) - If you're looking for a neo-noir heist thriller, you'll have to give this a try.  It's also one of the best modern westerns I've seen as well.  Everyone is great in their roles, but Chris Pine is outstanding as usual.

Minari (2020) - Steven Yeun is an incredibly talented actor and I'm glad he's really getting the much deserved recognition for his role here.

Have you seen any of these movies?  What are some of your recent favorite watches?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!
