The Hunt (The Hunt #1) by Andrew Fukuda - Review

❋ ❋ ❋

Gene isn't like everyone else. He can't run at lightning speed, sunlight doesn't bother him, and he doesn't have an unquenchable lust for blood. Gene isn't a vampire, in fact he's one of the few surviving humans living in a dystopian world ruled by vampires. And, he's actually doing a fair job of disguising himself and living unsuspected among them. Things begin to go downhill when he is randomly selected by lottery to participate in the last Heper Hunt, captured humans that will be released and properly hunted by a select few. His carefully crafted ruse begins to fall apart as some of the hunters begin to become suspicious of this true nature.

From the moment I heard about this series, I wanted to check it out. I mean, it's been billed as The Hunger Games with vampires, and to a degree that comparison holds. Either way, this novel is an intense thrill ride of a dystopian horror story. One of my favorite parts of this novel was seeing what the author did with the vampire mythology, which is a little different from others, and I particularly enjoyed how Gene walks us through everything that is normal for him and the vampires of his world. That could have become annoying, but it actually works in favor of the book as we learn more and more about his world. I also enjoyed the world-building, as we go through a world where hepers aren't at the top of the food chain. That being said, I wish there was more world-building in terms of how Gene's world developed. Overall, if you enjoy horror, vampires, and dystopian thrillers, you can't go wrong with The Hunt by Andrew Fukuda which successfully manages to combine all three. I'm looking forward to continuing this trilogy with The Prey.

I read this novel from October 15 - 19, 2015 and my review is also on Goodreads.
