Beat The Backlist 2025 - Announcement & TBR

Happy Wednesday everyone!  Today, I'm sharing my potential TBR for the Beat The Backlist 2025 reading challenge.  I took part in this challenge ages ago - way back in 20182019, and 2024 - and I decided that I ought to participate in Austine Decker's year long challenge again this year.  The rules for the challenge are really easy - read books published in 2024 or earlier and read them during 2025.  Also, any format, genre, rereads, and stacking it with other challenges all count for this challenge.  You can either choose to read any amount or anything at all, or you can opt to follow the either 24 or 52 book prompt list which require you to select only one book per prompt.  This time around I've decided to tackle the 24 book prompt list and all of my choices are books that I haven't read before.  If you're interested, here is the BlueSky account for the challenge and if you share your progress on social media, you should use #BeatTheBacklist.  You can also join in the fun over on The StoryGraph.  Without further ado, let's get to my challenge TBR:

1. title includes a type of flower

My choice: Roses in Red Wax (Darnalay Castle #1) by Louise Mayberry - One of my friends gave me this a little while ago and while historical romance isn't normally my thing. the setting does sound intriguing.

2. less than 100 pages

My choice: The Tea Master and the Detective (Universe of Xuya) by Aliette de Bodard - I've had my eye on this for a long time.  This is giving me the perfect chance to finally pick it up.

3. on your TBR for over a year

My choice: The Hammer by K.J. Parker - It's been a long time since I've read this author, but I remember enjoying his style of fantasy.

4. title starts with a "v"

My choice: Victorious (The Lost Fleet #6) by Jack Campbell - I can't believe I'm already so far in this series.

5. more than 30 chapters

My choice: The Twelve (The Passage #2) by Justin Cronin - I really liked book one and I've been putting this off for too long.

6. standalone debut

My choice: Clytemmestra by Costanza Casati - I'm always on the lookout for an interesting Greek mythology retelling.

7. tiniest on the TBR

My choice: Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio - I'm really looking forward to this horror novel.  This is the thinnest book on my tbr.

8. celebrity book club pick

My choice: Chill Factor (Weather Warden #3) by Rachel Caine - I really like Rachel Caine's brand of fantasy and the first two were pretty great.  This was a pick for Felicia Day's book club.

9. way back in 2020

My choice: Phoenix Extravagant by Yoon Ha Lee - This fantasy novel sounds like it could be pretty cool.

10. as seen on social media

My choice: House of Marionne (House of Marionne #1) by J. Elle - I remember seeing this all over social media last year.  I hope this will be as good as it sounds.

11. a chapter by any other name

My choice: Under Wildwood (Wildwood Chronicles #2) by Colin Melody - I'm planning on reading the first book for a challenge I'm doing over on The StoryGraph.

12. prequel/ sequel

My choice: The Doctor and the Kid (Weird West Tales #2) by Mike Resnick - I read the third book in this series and it was pretty fun.  I'm looking forward to reading more from this world.

13. between 276-325

My choice: The Haunting of Blackwood House (The Haunting of Blackwood House #1) by Darcy Coates - Darcy Coates is one of my favorite horror writers and this sounds pretty creepy.

14. beyond your perspective

My choice: A Royal Passion: The Turbulent Marriage of Charles I of England and Henrietta Maria of France by Katie Whitaker - I wasn't quite sure what to pick for this, but this book about royalty seemed like as good a choice as any.  It sounds like it will be fascinating.

15. originally written in another language

My choice: The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon - This has been on my tbr for way too long.  I going to be participating in the Read Around the World Challenge - Europe in 2025 and this is one of my picks.

16. oldie but a goodie

My choice: Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow - This has been recommended to me so many times - I have to try it.

17. extra, extra!

My choice: Realm of Ash (The Books of Ambha #2) by Tasha Suri - Book one was really cool and this has been sitting on my shelf for too long.

18. companion novel

My choice: Hunter's Moon (Doctor Who: New Series Adventures #43) by Paul Finch - I'm going a slightly different way with this prompt in this novel series is a companion to the tv show, and it features Amy and Rory as the Doctor's companions.  I've seen some mixed reviews, but I'm still looking forward to it.

19. silhouette on the cover

My choice: The Boy on the Bridge (The Girl With All the Gifts #2) by M.R. Carey - I really enjoyed book one so I hope this will be just as good.

20. not first, nor last

My choice: The Alloy of Law (Mistborn #4) by Brandon Sanderson - I really enjoyed the first three and I have a feeling I might prefer this next one more.

21. more than 600 pages

My choice: Ordinary Monsters (The Talents Trilogy #1) by J.M. Miro - Historical fantasy is one of my favorite genres and this sounds fun.

22. not your typical genre

My choice: Funny Story by Emily Henry - This author's adult contemporaries have been recommended to me a lot, so I'll give one a try.

23. childhood favorite re-read

My choice: Stay Out of the Basement (Goosebumps #2) by R.L. Stine - I loved this series when I was a kid!  Since there's going to be another season of the tv adaption on Disney+ this January it would be nice to jump into one of the books in the series that this season will be inspired by.

24. librarian rec

My choice: Murder Your Employer by Rupert Holmes - I've been told this is a good one - and it does sound fun.

Have you read any of these books?  Which should I read first?  Are you participating in this challenge?  Congrats for making it this far and as always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!
