Reindeer Readathon 2024 - Wrap Up & Mini Reviews

Happy Saturday everyone!  Today I'm sharing my wrap up and mini reviews for the Reindeer Readathon which will ran for the entire month of December and was hosted by Erik @ Breakeven Books with some help from NoelleChristine & MoKristinHannahVanessa and Steffany.  I was on Team Mistletoe this year which was hosted by Erik himself.  I managed to complete all of the books on my original tbr and earned all of my points - 275 points!  Without further ado, let's get to my mini reviews:

DASHER - 10 PTS - Read a book that is recommended to you on social media or is a list recommendation (YouTube, Goodreads, Google, etc.).

❋ ❋
Thief of the Heights by Son M. is a solid standalone YA fantasy sci-fi dystopian0, but it takes awhile to get going and then it's rushes a little too much to really stick the ending.  I definitely appreciated the diversity and the atmosphere. I wished for more in terms of world-building though.  I may be back for more from the author in the future.

My review is also on Goodreads.

DANCER - 15 PTS - Read a book genre that you feel matches your favorite music genre (i.e. Pop-Fantasy, Rock/ Metal-Thriller/ Horror, R&B-Romance, etc.) + Christmas Carols (20 PTS)

❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋
Blackout (Newsflesh #3) by Mira Grant was excellent and the audiobook production definitely helps make it.  Honestly, this series has just been getting better as it goes along. I can't wait to read book four, Feedback.  If you're at all interested in post-apocalyptic stories or zombies, you can't miss it.

My review is also on Goodreads.

PRANCER - 10 PTS - Read a book where the synopsis mentions a named special event/ date.

❋ ❋
Yes, I was pretty out of the loop with A Scandal in Battersea (Elemental Masters #12) by Mercedes Lackey but it was still good to see Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Someday I'll have to try book one in this series and just plain read more from this author.  If you're a fan of historical fantasy or Holmes, you may want to try this story.

VIXEN - 15 PTS - Read a book you didn't buy (Kindle Unlimited, Library, Borrowed, Gift, etc.) + Christmas Lights (15 PTS)

❋ ❋ ❋ ❋
I'm glad I decided to read Elle(s), Vol. 1: The New Girl by Kid Toussaint after finding it on Libby. The storyline is intriguing and I love the art style. The use of color, especially Elle's hair is a great choice. This volume is pretty short and with how it ended I'm looking forward to reading the next volume.

My review is also on Goodreads.

COMET - 15 PTS - Read a book that ends on the last digit of the day of your birth (i.e. 28th would have to end  in 8) + Christmas Star (25 PTS)

❋

DNF'd @ p. 50

Witches Steeped in Gold (Witches Steeped in Gold #1) by Ciannon Smart sounded like it could be great but unfortunately it wasn't working out for me. Primarily, it's far too slow and boring and the characters I'd met up to that point were difficult to tell apart. After only 50 pages I realized that I wasn't interested in continuing on for another 483 more pages.

My review is also on Goodreads.

CUPID - 15 PTS - Read a book from an author that you have already given 5 stars.

❋ ❋ ❋ ❋
The Scapegoat by Daphne du Maurier  is another fascinating read from a favorite author.  Somehow I'd managed to totally miss it before now.  It really sucked me in straight away.  I'm not sure how I feel about that ending though.  Anyway, I'll have to watch the movie adaptation with Alec Guinness soon and see just how it brings the story to the big screen.

My review is also on Goodreads.

DONNER - 20 PTS - Read a book where the cover contains one of the first 4 words you see in the word search grid on page 4.  Must be a word from the list + Christmas Elf (15 PTS).

❋ ❋

Silver in the Bone (Silver in the Bone #1) by Alexandra Bracken is a solid YA fantasy. I absolutely love the idea of this and it starts off so well. That said it's 467 pages and it started to lose me a little around halfway through. I finished it and has a good ending, but honestly I don't think it held my interest enough to come back for book two no matter how much I enjoy Arthurian legend.

My review is also on Goodreads and my Beat the Backlist 2024 - December Update.

BLITZEN - 15 PTS - Choose 3 books that start with the same letter.  Randomly choose one of them to read (Random number generator, have someone choose, etc.).

❋ ❋
Every Bone a Prayer by Ashley Blooms just wasn't quite for me. Maybe I was expecting something else than what I got but it didn't work for me overall. I did like the descriptiveness of the writing though.

My review is also on Goodreads.

RUDOLPH - 15 PTS - Read a debut novel + Christmas Tree (20 PTS).

❋ ❋
I wanted to love Immortal Dark (Immortal Dark Trilogy #1) by Tigest Girma, but I didn't care for the characters and was too confused. I wanted the world building to make more sense the further I got into it, but it never quite did for me. I liked the idea of this more than anything.

My review is also on Goodreads.

SLEIGHING IT - 50 PTS

❋ ❋

The Loop by Nicholas Evans has an intriguing central idea,  but it's way too long and I couldn't get into any of the human characters. I realized about halfway through that I wanted the wolves to be the POV characters. I could have done without the drama as well which was starting to become almost that of a soap opera. This is my first book by this author so I didn't know what to expect at all.

My review is also on Goodreads.

Are you taking part in this year's Reindeer Readathon?  Have you read any of these books?  Which book should I read first?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!
