The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty + 50/50 Friday

On Friday's I take part in three weekly link ups - The Friday 56, hosted by Freda's Voice, Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader, and 50/50 Friday is a new weekly link up and it is hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books. For The Friday 56, you choose a book, a book you have just finished, a book you are about to start, your current read, and share a line or a few lines that grab you (but don't spoil anything) from page 56 or 56% of the way through the ebook. Post it and share your post's url on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post. As for Book Beginnings, you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires, and then link up your post's url with Rose City Reader. Then, for 50/50 Friday, every week there's a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - you share a book that suits each category and link up on the hosts blogs.

This week I'm spotlighting one of my Sci-fi July reads for Devour Your TBR, Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty.  This sounds like an awesome sci-fi mystery thriller and it's totally giving me vibes of the gangers from Doctor Who.  Plus, some of my favorite bloggers and reviewers have had nothing but good things to say about this novel.

Beginning:

Day 1
July 25, 2493

Sound struggled to make its way through the thick synth-amneo fluid.  Once it reached Maria Arena's ears, it sounded like a chain saw: loud, insistent, and unending.  She couldn't make out the words, but it didn't sound like a situation she wanted to be involved in.

56:

"This is not her area of expertise," Paul said.  "She's better suited for maintenance and cleanup."

He wrinkled his nose and added, "And she's going to have a disgusting job cleaning out the cloning bay."

50/50 Friday: Favorite/ Least Favorite Memoir

Favorite - My Family and Other Animals (The Corfu Trilogy #1) by Gerald Durrell - No question about it. This humorous memoir is my all time favorite of the genre.  Plus, the adaptations (the 2005 made for tv movie and The Durrells in Corfu) are both awesome.

Least favorite - A Million Little Pieces by James Frey - You might remember the controversy surrounding this "memoir".  Can you say "fictionalized" and "embellished"?

What are you reading this week?  Have you read any of these books?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!

  4. Not usually a sci-fi future fan but this one does intrigue me, more from the synopsis I read though. Happy weekend!

  5. I read A MILLION LITTLE PIECES before it was exposed as a fraud. Even as I read it, I said this can't be true. After I found out I was right, I moved it to the fiction section of the library. Ha! My Friday quotes

  6. Six Wakes sounds like a Sci-fi I might actually enjoy. There has been more misses than hits when it comes to that genre.

  7. I should have checked out that third meme. So many new memoirs come out all the time! I'm in the middle of one now, and I think that's what's on my list next too.

  10. I haven't really read many memoirs (mostly because I find them terribly pretentious if not done well) but it seems like My Family and Other Animals could be right up my alley. Thanks for linking up, Lauren!
