The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): Ten After Closing by Jessica Bayliss + 50/50 Friday

On Friday's I take part in three weekly link ups - The Friday 56, hosted by Freda's Voice, Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader, and 50/50 Friday is a new weekly link up and it is hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books. For The Friday 56, you choose a book, a book you have just finished, a book you are about to start, your current read, and share a line or a few lines that grab you (but don't spoil anything) from page 56 or 56% of the way through the ebook. Post it and share your post's url on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post. As for Book Beginnings, you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires, and then link up your post's url with Rose City Reader. Then, for 50/50 Friday, every week there's a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - you share a book that suits each category and link up on the hosts blogs.

Happy Friday everyone!  This week I'm spotlighting one of my Magical Readathon books, Ten After Closing by Jessica Bayliss.  This book will fulfill the prompt to read a contemporary.  I've enjoyed the other novel I've read from Bayliss, Broken Chords, and I'm looking forward to trying more from her.

Beginning:

Three Minutes After Closing

I glance at my watch.  Three minutes after ten.

56:

The people who were supposed to save us were right out there, and now they're gone.

50/50 Friday: Favorite/ Least Favorite DC Character

Favorite - John Constantine - I'm specifically featuring live-action performances of DC characters for this week.  I really miss seeing Matt Ryan's Constantine every week - I was crushed when it got cancelled by NBC.  I'm glad though that he's popped up on the CW's other DC tv shows and that he's portraying the animated version of the character as well.

Least favorite - Ben Afleck's Batman - Don't get me wrong, Bruce Wayne/ Batman is a favorite, but I can't stand Afleck's grating take on the character for the DC movies.  I miss Christian Bale and Michael Keaton, and even Will Arnett's Lego Batman.

What are you reading this weekend?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!

  7. This first quote seems a bit redundant. I hope it is better than the opening.

  11. I've been loving John Constantine as one of the Legends on CW. He's such a great character. I liked the show before he joined it, but once he showed up, it became one of my favorite, must-watch shows. :)

  12. Ten After Closing sounds like it will be intense from the description of it and the hostage situation. I like the excerpts you shared.

I am not at all familiar with Constantine. I had to ask my husband who he was. LOL I didn't mind Afleck's Batman, but I definitely favor Christian Bale in the role.

I hope you have a good weekend. Stay safe and well.

    1. Constantine is the lead in the Hellblazer comic book series and one of the main characters of Justice League Dark if you'd like to dive into the character. :)

  13. You can't tell much from the beginning, but the teaser makes it sound exciting! I'm finally finishing The Overstory by Richard Powers. It is too long!

  15. I love that dark, creepy cover! The 56 snippet sounds really ominous, too. This sounds like a good one!
