The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games #0) by Suzanne Collins + 50/50 Friday

On Friday's I take part in three weekly link ups - The Friday 56, hosted by

Happy Friday everyone!  This week I'm spotlighting one of my current reads, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games #0) by Suzanne Collins.  It is my final PopCulture Readathon book - I'm not sure if I'll manage to finish it in time.  Honestly, I'm not quite sure what to think about this one so far.

Beginning:

Coriolanus released the fistful of cabbage into the pot of boiling water and swore that one day it would never pass his lips again.

56:

But who was he to feel superior?

50/50 Friday: Overrated/ Underrated Series

Overrated - Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard - I definitely don't get the hype for this series.  The first book was an okay mashup of the X-Men meets The Hunger Games, but after that it went down hill.  I actually only read the first three books and never made it as far the finale.  I just couldn't do it anymore once I realized (near the end of King's Cage unfortunately) that the series had been stretched out from the original three books to four.

Underrated - Spectacle series by Jodie Lynn Zdrok - This historical fantasy mystery duology deserves all the attention it can get.

What are you reading this weekend?  Have you read any of these books?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!

  1. I haven't heard of the Spectacle series before. I just read the synopsis for the books, and they seem interesting. I'm going to add them to my TBR list.

  2. Surprising to see a new blog from you. I wasn't sure if it was you at first. I will be eager to read your review of Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I got pretty impatient with it.

  3. I love The Hunger Games book but Snow was such a horrible character, is the book worth a read?

I’ve only read the first Red Queen book, I really enjoyed it but not enough to read the rest!

    1. It's interesting to see him progress into that and the background on the games themselves, but I wouldn't say it was exactly necessary.

  4. This is a good day! I've only visited two bloggers so far, and I've already added two books to my TBR list. I haven't heard of the Spectacle series yet, but I am looking into it now.

Please let us know when you've decided how you feel about The Hunger Games #0. I also haven't decided if I'm going to read it or not....

    1. That's always fun!

It's solid and you should read it if you're a big fan of the series, but I wouldn't call it necessary at all.

  5. Interesting excerpts! I guess cabbage must be a symbol of something in his life..or he just hates the flavor. Thanks for sharing, and here's mine: “JUST BETWEEN US”

  7. Oooh, I've seen this book around, but I never did read The Hunger Games. I can't get over the name Coriolanus. It makes me giggle every time, because I'm obviously a five-year-old in an adult body. xD I really need to give the Spectacle duology a try, though! I've always loved those covers and thought it sounded interesting.

    Here's my Friday post.

  11. I don't know if I want to read about Snow, from what I've heard, it's just an okay book. But I don't know if he's a character who's backstory is one I need. But I do hope you enjoyed reading it.
I only ever read the first book of Red Queen series, and while I remember liking it more than what seemed like most people at the time I never really bothered to continue.
I wish there were more duologies. Every series is either a trilogy, or 8-10 books.
