Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Enjoyed Recently That Weren't My Typical Genre

Happy Tuesday everyone!  This week's topic for Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, is Books I Enjoyed Recently That Weren't My Typical Genre.  My review will be linked to the title.  Here we go, from most recently read:

Unstoppable by Bill Nye

Ross Poldark by Winston Graham

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Geek Girl by Holly Smale

An Elephant in the Garden by Michael Morpurgo

Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison

Sister Mischief by Laura Goode

Night Song by Tricia Goyer

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

Let's Get Lost by Adi Alsaid

So, what do you think of my list this week?  Have you read any of these, and if so have you also enjoyed them?  What books have you enjoyed that weren't your typical genre?  Comments are appreciated - I try to respond to everyone!

  1. Simon made my list as well! I haven't read but that one but I do recognize some of these titles!

  3. I had Simon vs and Wolf Hall on my TBR for last year but didn't get to them. Seeing them here, reminding me of them again. :) And seeing them on someones "enjoyed reading" list is always a good push to remember to read them :)

    Great list :)

  4. You have some lofty titles on your list. I don't know the genres of all of them but your list made me realize I should have added a LONG book to my list. I think my biggest aversion to books is the length. Ha! My TTT

  5. I really feel like I should read Bill Nye's book. I learned more about science from his show back in middle school than I ever did from my teacher.

    1. According to his book, he actually has another - I'll have to pick it up, too. Nye was a much better teacher than any of my real life science teachers. Thanks for sharing!

  6. It's been a long time since I read Angus Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging but I remember laughing the whole way through! Poldark and Wolf Hall are both on my TBR list but they're so large I've been a little scared to start them!

    Happy Reading

Poldark and Wolf Hall are definitely worth the time! :) Thanks for stopping by!

  8. I've got Ross Poldark on my shelf at home, Lauren. Love the series and am looking forward to reading the books as well. I also enjoyed the Wolf Hall series, but I tried a Hilary Mantel book once and could not get into it. Her style was just too precious, and it detracted from the story. It's a shame, because I'm really interested in English history, but I'm going to give that one a miss.

    1. Poldark, the show, was great! Turns out that it's a really good adaptation of the book! When it came to Wolf Hall, I was determined to finish the book because of the miniseries. It was worth it but it took awhile for me to get into the writing style. Thanks for visiting, Paula!

  9. Just about all of these are outside what I typically read! The only one I've picked up so far is Simon VS the Homosapien's Agenda and I loved that so perhaps I should check out more of these :D thanks for sharing

  10. My blogmate keeps telling me I need to watch or read Poldark! She would be happy to see it made a list this week :p

  11. A really solid collection of books!! I feel like I should watch Poldark, but I'm scared that I'll never escape the realms of the TV show - perhaps the book would be a good compromise!

    1. The show is actually a really good adaptation of the book as it turns out! :)

  12. You have a couple that have been on my radar. I've been wanting to pick up Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, but it intimidates me. It's not because it is a LGBTQ+ novel, but because it has so much love. I've read Lets Get Lost about a year ago, and enjoyed it. I didn't love it though. What about you?

    Here is my TTT!

    1. Simon was easily one of my favorites from last year, and I'd definitely be interested to hear what you think of it. Let's Get Lost was very good, but I wouldn't classify it as a favorite.

      Thanks for sharing!

  13. Bill Nye has a book?! Why have I not heard of this?? His science videos were all we watched in middle school science class! His theme song is the greatest :D

  16. Hi!! Thanks for checking out my TTT! I've wanted to read Geek Girls since I saw it on my friend's blog. How did you find the book??

    1. Thanks for visiting mine, too!

If I'm remembering correctly, it was recommended to me as a read alike for Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging. :)

  18. I really want to pick up Simon but that is a genre that I haven't read at all. I really don't have anything against LGBTQ but I honestly haven't read any book in that genre. I've read books with LGBTQ characters, though.

  19. You have so many books that are new to me! But I do keep hearing so many amazing things about Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens, so I hope to pick that up someday! :)

  20. I've heard of a few of these, but haven't read any yet. Nice list! :)

  21. Being a TV addict of BBC's Poldark, I really like to read the book (I was even inspired to buy a copy which is so not like this non-classic reader) and Geek Girl looks darling. :)

Thanks as always for visiting the blog, Lauren. :)

  22. I've only read Simon from your list and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED that novel. Tbh, I wasn't excited about it at all, because I disliked both the cover and the title when I first saw them, plus the blurb didn't promise anything SPECTACULAR. But, oh man, was it a spectular novel! Amazing list! :)

  23. Can't say I've heard of one of these...so good choices for the topic.

  24. Simon vs. is a really good contemporary! Although my favourite contemporary might have to be Seven Ways We Lie (I forgot to put it on my TTT)

  25. Ross Poldark is the only one of these that I've read - and I really enjoyed it. I wouldn't say that it's not really me (I read a lot of classics), but the fact that it was a romantic family melodrama did put it a bit out of my normal reading scope. Nice list :)

  26. I haven't read any from your list, although Wolf Hall is on my TBR shelf. I've heard Bill Nye on the radio, but didn't know about his book. I think it would fall outside my usual reading as well. I have heard of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, but haven't read it. This is a great list, Lauren!

  27. ANGUS! SO MUCH LOVE! Have you pursued the series?

I'm yet to read Wolf Hall but I've heard it's very good.

    1. I've read the first two books in the series so far and I'm definitely going to have to continue with it! :) Wolf Hall is pretty good - even if it does take a bit to get used to. Did you watch the miniseries?
