Wyrd & Wonder 2026 - Sunday Funday: Week 2 Update

Happy Sunday Funday  and welcome to my second weekly update for Wyrd & Wonder!  Wyrd & Wonder 2026 which is a month long celebration of all things fantasy co-hosted by Lisa @ Dear Geek Place, imyril @ There’s Always Room For One More, Ariana @ The Book Nook, Annemieke @ A Dance With Books, and Jorie @ Jorie Loves A Story (artwork by Varvara Gorbash).  This is a lot of fun and I've made more great progress so far.  Keep reading to see what I've gotten up to since my last update.

My Wyrd & Wonder This Week:

What I've Watched So Far:

Fate: The Winx Saga, Season 1 -

Episode 1: You know, I remember watching Winx Club a little bit but never really got into it. I don't have any particular connection to the series. This live action adaptation looked like it could be fun, but unfortunately this first episode was more irritating to me than anything. Mainly for me that's the acting and writing which just aren't there to keep me wanting to come back for another episode. It was good to see Rob James-Collier though. I know I've seen him in things outside of Downton Abbey before, but it's still surprising when I see him in something set in present times. The biggest shock of the entire episode was realizing the actor playing Sky is Danny Griffin who is currently Jolyon Forsyte Jr. in The Forsytes on PBS Masterpiece. That is so strange to me. Anyway, I don't think I'll be back for the rest of this series. One episode of this was enough for me.

My review is also on Serialized.

❋

Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Season 2 -

Episode 1: This is such a good introduction back into the series. It's good to see everyone again - the kids are starting to grow up! Also, Daniel Diemer is doing a fantastic job bringing Tyson to life.

My review is also on Serialized.

❋.5
Episode 2: That chariot race sequence was pretty epic and the use of that Mariah Carey song was an excellent choice. I think I might react like Tantalus though if birds started attacking me though... The scenes between Percy and Grover in the dreams are hilarious. Tyson is really just happy to be there and I expect his inventions to come in very handy.

My review is also on Serialized.

viy poster

Viy (1967) - I went into this mostly blind and I'm glad I did. It takes a bit to get going a drags a bit, but definitely stick with it because all the witch stuff is awesome. That finale is wild. I was definitely rooting for the witch.

dragonslayer poster

Dragonslayer (1981) - I'm am genuinely surprised how much I liked this, but then again I had zero expectations going in. Vermithrax Pejorative is easily one of the coolest movie dragons I've seen. The movie was a lot darker and grittier (and had more nudity) than I was expecting for a PG rather live action Disney film. If this came out just a few years later, it would definitely be rated PG-13. Valerian was easily my favorite and most interesting human character of this film. I was actually shocked by Princess Elspeth's fate. I would have been traumatized as heck if I watched this as a little kid!

What I've Read So Far:

The Last Legacy (The World of the Narrows #3) by Adrienne Young is the first book I've read from this author in a little while.  I liked being back in this world and seeing a little more of it than we had previously. That said I was not interested in the romance of this and didn't particularly like the ending a whole lot either.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

Under the Pendulum Sun by Jeanette Ng is a book I went into knowing very little about going into it. It's a little slower-paced, but I loved the thick gothic atmosphere.  That said I wasn't exactly a fan of the twist.  Plus, I wasn't expecting quite so much religion, and I was hoping to like the characters a little more.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

The Summoner (Chronicles of the Necromancer #1) by Gail Z. Martin is a book I wanted to like a lot more than I did. I think I was just expecting something different based on the description on the back and the cover itself. I've read other books from the author in the past which I enjoyed so I knew this had potential to be unique and have memorable characters, world, and story, but it just didn't. I won't be back for book two.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

Midnight Blue-Light Special (InCryptid #2) by Seanan McGuire was a lot of fun and I'm glad I decided to return to this series because I think it could become a favorite. I can't wait to read book three - and hopefully soon.  I haven't gone wrong with McGuire yet!

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

❋ ❋
The Privilege of the Sword (The World of Riverside #2) by Ellen Kushner is a new favorite. I loved the characters and the world-building. I can't wait to read more books set in Riverside and anything else by this author.  I had no expectations so consider me pleasantly surprised.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.
