Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge 2026 - May Update: A Rival Most Vial & White is for Witching

Happy Saturday everyone!  I hope everyone's had a nice May so far.  I've now completed 10 tasks for Book Riot's 2026 Read Harder Challenge.  The tasks I completed in April required me to read a romantasy book with a queer and/or BIPOC main character and a work of magical realism or fabulism.  I selected A Rival Most Vial: Potioneering for Love and Profit (Side Quest Row #1) by R.K. Ashwick and White is for Witching by Helen Oyeyemi respectively.  Read on to see my mini reviews and my plans for next month:

A Rival Most Vial: Potioneering for Love and Profit (Side Quest Row #1) by R.K. Ashwick is a fun fantasy, but by the end I just wanted more. It's pretty low-stakes, but I wish more had happened and wanted more both for and from the characters, especially Ambrose. It has a lot of potential to improve as the story continues over the course of the series, now that we've gotten the introductions to the characters and their world out of the way. I'll definitely be back to see what's coming up next in the sequel.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

White is for Witching by Helen Oyeyemi is a unique read, but I wouldn't call the style quite for me. It's very atmospheric but I wish I was more interested in the main characters. The secondary and minor characters tended to be more intriguing to me in comparison. I also was expecting there to be much more plot to a book of this length.

My review is also on Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

Next Up For June:

Read a novel with a main character who uses they/them pronouns

My choice: Otherworldly by F.T. Lukens - In Deeper Waters was delightful and I'm looking forward to read more from Lukens.

Read a sports book by a woman, trans, or nonbinary author

My choice: Ana on the Edge by A.J. Sass - I don't often read sports books, but I do like figure skating.

Are you taking part in this challenge?  Have you read either of these books?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!
