2020 Popsugar Reading Challenge - Update #5 & Mini Reviews

Happy Wednesday everyone!  Today, I'm sharing my fifth progress update and set of mini reviews for the books I've completed since my last update for the 2020 Popsugar Reading Challenge.  I've completed 6 books since then, for a total of 36 of 50 books complete.  I'm really making a lot of progress! Without further ado, here we go in the order I read them in:

❋ ❋ ❋ ❋ ❋

The King of Crows by Libba Bray is a brilliant finale. The entire Diviners series has been absolutely outstanding and every thing is wrapped up really well in this fourth and finale installment. It was great seeing everyone again, especially my two favorites Ling and Henry. Seeing them all work together and interact with each other is a real highlight especially when one takes into consideration their diverse backgrounds. It's a real roller coaster, so be prepared for those highs, lows, twists, turns, and moments when you feel weightless because this has it all. I can't recommend this series enough, particularly on audiobook. January LaVoy is one of my favorite narrators and she expertly brings Libba Bray's vision to life. I'm so glad I decided to stick with the audiobook editions throughout the series because the production on each and every one has been fantastic. It's difficult to say goodbye to all of this series, but it had an excellent run. Maybe someday in the future we'll get to spend a little time these characters again.

Holy wow! Why did I put A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin off for so long?! I loved the first two A Song of Ice and Fire novels, and this is no different. It's a brick of a book, but it's totally worth getting lost in the world of Westeros and beyond. I know my review isn't doing just how impressive this is, but I will say that my favorites this time around are Arya, Brienne, Jon Snow, Sam. I need to get caught up on this series, and the tv adaptation while I'm at it.

I was mostly interested in this short story anthology called Shadowed Souls edited by Jim Butcher and Kerrie L. Hughes for the Dresden Files and Cal Leandros stories. Both of those were fantastic, but I also enjoyed the Jim C. Hines, Seanan McGuire, and Kevin J. Anderson contributions to this collection. I'm going to have to start in on the InCryptid series and the Dan Shamble, Zombie PI series soon because their stories were pretty great.

Wow! I officially understand the hype with The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I couldn't put it down and I sped right through it. I can't wait to read book two. Talk about a book hangover though after reading this and A Storm of Swords so closely together. I can't believe I sat on this for so long before deciding to give it a go, but it truly lives up to all of the positive things I'd heard. I'm glad I have a copy of The Wiseman's Fear ready to go on my shelf - it's officially been bumped up my TBR. I can't recommend The Kingkiller Chronicle enough, especially if you enjoy getting lost in epic fantasy worlds.

Dreamland Burning by Jennifer Latham is an absolute must read, especially on audiobook. The production is outstanding and Luke Slattery and Pyeng Threadgill are quite talented narrators. It honestly deserves all of the attention it can get. I can't believe I'm just now learning about the real life history behind this novel. How is this now in every American history textbook? Latham expertly alternates between two mixed race teens living in different eras of Tulsa, Oklahoma and explores difficult and thought-provoking topics. With everything going on right now, the history in the making, this novel should become required reading. It's interesting to see what has thankfully changed and progressed and what unfortunately hasn't come so far over the years. Finally, I just want to say how happy I was to see Rowan's awesome friend James, who is asexual by the way, get to stand in the spotlight with her.

Deciding to read All the President's Men by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward right now during this moment of Donald Trump's presidency is probably one of the best choices I could have made. Thank you to the 2020 Popsugar Reading Challenge for finally pushing me to read this book for the task of reading a book by or about a journalist. I don't normally read a lot of books about politics, but I'm glad I did myself the favor.

  1. Wow, this seems like a heavy group of books, both in size and subject matter. But I love how high all your ratings are! I definitely want to read All the President's Men and Dreamland Burning.

  2. Jealous of your progress. I'm still not halfway through but I'm getting there. I'm still at 19 or 20.
I've been interested to read The Name of the Wind but I'm intimidated by its length and its hype.
