The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

Welcome to The Friday 56, a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice.

These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

I'm also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.  The rules are pretty simple - you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires.  Don't forget to link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.

This week I'm spotlighting my next read, To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han.  Contemporary YA isn't really my genre of choice, but I've heard that this is one to pick up.  Maybe it'll surprise me and I'll love it like I did Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.  Based on the snippets I picked out, I am liking the tone and I definitely want to continue.  One thing's for sure, this will be be quite the change of pace!

Book Beginning:

I like to save things.  Not important things like whales or people or the environment.  Silly things.  Porcelain bells, the kind you get at souvenir shops.  Cookie cutters you'll never use, because who needs a cookie in the shape of a foot?  Ribbons for my hair.  Love letters.  Of all the things I save, I guess you could say my love letters are my most prized possession.

56:

we were all wearing hats, because I insisted.  "You have got to wear a hat to a tea party," I kept saying until Margot finally put hers on just so I'd stop.  She had on Mommy's straw gardening hat, and Kitty was wearing a tennis visor, ad I'd fancied up an old fur hat of Grandma's by pinning a few plastic flowers on top.

  5. I do like the fact she saves the love letters. I would save cookie cutters although unused and porcelain bells... all items do seem pretty and sweet. I would like this book. Have fun reading.

    1. I like saving letters, too. Not love letters, though - old letters from family members etc...

      Thanks!

  6. I liked this book although I didn't always love the characters! Her little sister was great though!

  7. I love the cover. Normally I do not go for pure young adult romance but this one sounds interesting. Happy Friday!

  8. Oh, I love this one. Lara Jean so closely resembles myself in high school, it's scary. I need to pick up the sequel soon. Have a great weekend!

  12. Hi Lauren,

I'm not really a fan of contemporary romantic fiction, so I shall probably pass on this one.

The 56 excerpt does sound a little juvenile to me and I am trying to work out how old this person is.

I do like the book beginning though and that excerpt I can directly relate to. My 20 something niece has just returned home to the UK, after working for a year in the UK pavilion at the World Showcase in EPCOT, Disney World, Florida. She has had the time of her life and was about the only one of her intake who didin't want to come home. She has landed with an entire suitcase of memories and memorabilia she has collected from just about everywhere she visited, from Hawaii to Chicago, with the special items being given pride of place in her 'memory box' :)

I hope that you enjoy the book more than you anticipate and thanks for stopping by Fiction Books this week :)

    Yvonne.

    1. Usually that's the case with me, too. This isn't my go to genre at all. In regards to the 56, I believe it's actually a flashback to when they were much younger. That sounds very cool - I would probably do the same! :)

  13. I liked the beginning of the book. Makes me think of my grandmother who had saved everything. I tend to follow in her path, but sometimes it's hard to know what to keep and what to get rid of. I don't want my house to ever appear on Hoarders (TV show). :)

    1. It kind of reminds me of long gone family members - they must have saved everything which got passed down. It's a great way to look into their lives 100+ years ago. :)
