ARC Mini Reviews: Hark! The Herald Angels Scream & Shotguns and Stagecoaches

Happy Saturday everyone!  Today I'm sharing two ARC mini reviews with you: Hark! The Herald Angels Scream edited by Christopher Golden (released on October 23rd, 2018) &  Shotguns and Stagecoaches: The Brave Men Who Rode for Wells Fargo in the Wild West by John Boessenecker (released on October 30th, 2018).  Both of these ARCs were provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  Read on to see my thoughts on these two stories.

❋ ❋ ❋

Hark! the Herald Angels Scream is an anthology of eighteen Christmas themed short horror stories from a unique and talented writers of the genre. Some of my favorite authors of the group include Christopher Golden (also the editor here), Seanan McGuire, Thomas E. Sniegoski, and Jonathan Maberry. While some of the shorts just weren't quite my style, there were some truly fantastic gems that were exactly what I was looking for. For me, the real standouts from the collection are "Absinthe & Angels" by Kelley Armstrong, "Christmas in Barcelona" by Scott Smith, "Love Me" by Thomas E. Sniegoski, "It's a Wonderful Knife" by Christopher Golden, and "The Hangman's Bride" by Sarah Pinborough. That's not to say that the other stories were bad, they just weren't what I has hoping for. Overall, I do recommend this collection, especially if you enjoy Tales From The Crypt or holiday centered horror.

I read this anthology from October 7 - 10, 2018 and my review is also on Goodreads.

I don't often read history of the Old West, but Shotguns and Stagecoaches: The Brave Men Who Rode for Wells Fargo in the Wild West is a must read for those interested in American history. John Boessenecker has clearly done his research and has done a decent job of making the subject matter accessible to those that don't already have that much knowledge in the topic. I appreciated that the book was broken down by period of the company, and it also includes many fascinating photos of the featured figures. I definitely recommend this if you're interested in the learning more about the American West.

I read this history for from October 10 - 11, 2018 and my review is also on Goodreads.

Do you plan on trying either of these upcoming releases?  What are you reading this weekend? As always, thanks very much for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!

  3. Christmas-themed horror stories? Hmm, I'm intrigued. I haven't thought about Tales from the Crypt in ages. I was probably too young to watch it and yet I loved it.
