Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Tropes

Happy Tuesday everyone!  Welcome to the Top Ten Tuesday now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.  This week's topic is Favorite Tropes from fantasy, sci-fi, and YA.  Here we go, in alphabetical order:

The Chosen One - Yes, I know that this has practically been done to death, but I still love it when it's done well.

Complex Morally Gray Characters - All of them please!

Dark, Creepy Fae - Along the lines of Holly Black and Susanna Clarke's take on them.

Dysfunctional Family - Not too out there, but enough to be totally believable.

Enemies to Allies - Think Thor and Loki.

Magic Schools - Yes, please!

Multiverse - I love reading and watching stories featuring parallel worlds.  A couple of recent favorites: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Special Powers - Where it's magical or superpowers, I'm totally there for it.

Strong Female Character - I like seeing a kick butt lady, but I'd hope they're well-written, complex, and flawed as well.

Time Travel - I can't resist, especially if it's anything like Back to the Future, Doctor Who, Bill & Ted, Timeless, or The Time Tunnel.

What are some of your favorite tropes?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!

  4. I'm a sucker for the chosen one, too. I'm just a little pickier than I used to be with that, too. And I love me some morally gray characters! I want aaaall the strong female characters, too, and all the different forms that takes (not necessarily wielding a sword and kicking butt).

  7. If its superhero related, I'm all about the special powers. No matter how many movies I've seen, I'm not weary of them. Yet. :D Also, dysfunctional families can be fun just so long as it's not too morbid, which I have seen before.

  8. Multiverses, when done right, are so good. I've always been fascinated by them. Gotta love the morally gray characters, too.

  10. I am all for complex grey characters! There are characters in Vic James's Dark Gifts trilogy I'm still not sure whether they were more good or bad!
