The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): Rose Under Fire (Code Name Verity #2) by Elizabeth Wein + 50/50 Friday

On Friday's I take part in three weekly link ups - The Friday 56, hosted by Freda's Voice, Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader, and 50/50 Friday is a new weekly link up and it is hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books. For The Friday 56, you choose a book, a book you have just finished, a book you are about to start, your current read, and share a line or a few lines that grab you (but don't spoil anything) from page 56 or 56% of the way through the ebook. Post it and share your post's url on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post. As for Book Beginnings, you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires, and then link up your post's url with Rose City Reader. Then, for 50/50 Friday, every week there's a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - you share a book that suits each category and link up on the hosts blogs.

Happy Friday everyone!  This week I'm spotlighting one of my Magical Readathon N.E.W.T.s 2020 books, Rose Under Fire (Code Name Verity #2) by Elizabeth Wein.  I can't believe I put this companion novel to one of my favorite YA historical stories off for so long.  I've already finished it and it was pretty great.

Beginning:

Rose Moyer Justice
August 2, 1944
Hamble, Southampton, Hampshire
Notes for an Accident Report

I just got back from Celia Forester's funeral.  I'm supposed to be writing up an official report for the Tempest she flew into the ground, since she's obviously not going to write it herself and I saw it happen.  And also because I feel responsible.

56:

Anyway, being an Ignorant American Schoolgirl gives me an open ticket to ask brazen, awkward questions, and I'd already put my foot in my mouth, so I just went on.

50/50 Friday: Best/ Worst Read Of July

Best - The Women with Silver Wings: The Inspiring True Story of the Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II by Katherine Sharp Landdeck - If you are at all interested in women's roles during wartime and aviation, this is an absolute must read.

Least Favorite - The Favorite Sister by Jessica Knoll - I was expecting something much different and I pretty much ended up hating everyone here.

What are you reading this week?  Have you read any of these books?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!

  1. I haven't read Code Name Verity or Rose Under Fire, but I remember hearing a lot of good things about them when they initially came out. The quotes are interesting. Also The Women with Silver Wings seems like a book I would want to read. I'm going to add it to my TBR list.

  8. I DNFd The Favorite Sister because EVERYONE WAS AWFUL. I couldn't relate to a single character, and there was definitely no one to root for.

    1. It's more of a companion book than a sequel but it's good either way.
