We Were Liars by E. Lockhart - Review

❋ ❋ ❋

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart follows a group of four friends, the Liars, from a privileged old-money family during their Summers on their grandfather's private island off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. There are lies upon lies and plenty of secrets to go around in this family, and the Liars begin to fall apart. Then, there is a terrible accident. An accident that Cady, our narrator, cannot remember, even though it happened two years ago and her mother swears she has told her multiple times. Cady knows she still suffers terrible migraines as a result of whatever happened before or after the accident. Finally learning the truth of that day two years ago will be devastating.

I don't say this often, but even though most of the characters are pretty unlikeable, I actually really enjoyed this suspenseful novel. I really wanted to know what happened to Cady and the author kept me guessing. I thought I had it pegged relatively early on, but no, it went in a completely different direction that I didn't see coming. There is a lot to like about this this story. I love Lockhart's writing style and structure, use of vivid imagery, and the slow burn mystery and suspense. I also enjoyed the detached, dreamlike quality of Cady's narrative as it works so well with her character and gives a good sense of life on the island. Let's not forget our unreliable narrator - I love a good story with an unreliable narrator! I would say more, but I would be getting deep into spoiler territory. The style isn't for everyone and it takes some time to get used to, especially when it comes to the imagery, but once I got going with it I couldn't stop! It thoroughly sucked me in!

E. Lockhart's We Were Liars isn't a book to miss! If you like the family component and beautiful setting of ABC's Revenge and twists along the lines of Shutter Island with Leonardo DiCaprio, you will want to read this!

To quote the dust jacket: "And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE."

I read this novel from September 11 - 13, 2014 and my review is also available on Goodreads.

  2. This book screwed me up, but I loved it? I don't know why, but I love it when authors mess with my mind! And I agree with you, the writing is very beautiful!

    1. Thanks for stopping by and so do I! And what better way to do that than with an unreliable narrator. :)
