The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman + 50/50 Friday

Welcome to The Friday 56, a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice.

These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

I'm also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.  The rules are pretty simple - you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires.  Don't forget to link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.

This week I'm spotlighting my upcoming read, The Invisible Library (The Invisible Library #1) by Genevieve Cogman.  It's my second read for Book Riot's 2017 Read Harder Challenge which fulfills the debut novel task.  Honestly, I was sold on this book as soon as I heard it's about librarian spies and is recommended for fans of Doctor Who!  I cans't wait to start in on it!

Beginning:

Irene pssed the mop across the stone floor in smooth, careful strokes, idly admiring the gleam of wet flagstones in the lantern-light.  Her back was complaining, but that was only normal after an evening's worth cleaning.  The cleaning was certainly necessary.  The pupils at Prince Mordred's Private Academy for Boys managed to get just as much mud and muck on the floor as any other teenagers would.  Clean indoor studies in the dark arts, military history, and alchemy didn't preclude messy outdoor classes in strategic combat, duelling, and open-field assassination, and rugby.

56:

Irene looked unenthusiastically at the tattered partial wig that lay on the table looking like a mangy dark squirrel.  "Wearing that thing's going to cause more problems than going without," she decided.  "I'll be counter-fashionable.  Let's just be grateful that corsets aren't required wear any longer."

This week I'm also taking part in a brand new linkup called 50/50 Friday, which is hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books.  Every week they'll have a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - this week the topic is Most/ Least Likely To Go Running In Sleet.  Now, I'm not quite sure what to make of this topic, but I'll give it a try!

Most:

The only character that really comes to mind for this is at all is Ryan Dean West from Winger and Stand-Off by Andrew Smith - mostly because he plays rugby, goes running, and goes to school in Oregon (among other things) and it strikes me that he would definitely run in sleet.

Least:

\
Pi from Life of Pi by Yann Martel is the only character that I can think of for whatever reason - and maybe a good deal of that is the fact that he can't run while stranded and that it wouldn't sleet anyway.

  8. I must look into this book. It sounds great and I love the simple look of the cover. I have come to prefer covers that don't have anybody's face on it. Drawn or otherwise. I think it takes away from imagination to show a model or something to display what a character looks like.

  11. Hi Lauren,

I am generally up for reading any book which has books or reading in the title or premise.

I got all excited about 'The Invisible Library' until you mentioned 'Doctor Who' and then the premise got a bit 'Harry Potterish' - a little to much fantasy and science fiction for me, I'm afraid!

I did like the descriptive writing in the opening lines though.

Thanks for sharing and have a good weekend :)

I can totally understand why - it's an instant draw for me too!

That's too bad - those are a few of my favorite things so I can't help but get excited over them myself. :D

    1. That's good to know - I've heard so many good things about it!

I have no clue why anyone would want to do that - I mean, it just sounds like an accident waiting to happen if you ask me. :)
