Book Riot's 2017 Read Harder Challenge - July Update: Elon Musk: Inventing the Future & Flygirl

Time flies when you're having fun!  I can't believe that I've already completed the tasks for the June section of Book Riot's 2017 Read Harder Challenge!  This month I completed tasks thirteen and fourteen which required me to read a nonfiction book about technology and to read a book about war.  For the tasks, I selected Elon Musk: Inventing the Future by Ashlee Vance and Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith.  Read on to see my mini reviews and what's next for August:

❋ ❋ ❋

Absolutely fascinating look into Elon Musk's life and work - I particularly liked learning more about Tesla and Space-X. I can definitely understand why he's compared to Tony Stark. The only downside to this biography is that at times Vance totally sounds like he's totally gushing about his subject and that some of the technical talk dragged it down (for me, at least).

I listened to this audiobook from June 26 - June 29, 2017 (my library hold came in sooner than expected!) and my mini review is also available on Goodreads.

❋ ❋ ❋

Flygirls by Sherri L. Smith is an absolute must read for fans of historical fiction that draws on real life events. I was right there the entire ride through all the ups and downs alongside Ida Mae! This novel also deals with race and passing, especially in regards to Southern America and the military, and it's a fascinating, if at times entirely overwhelming and crushing - that being said the author handles everything well. If you're interested in women in World War II, particularly the WASPs, you need to to read this novel right away.

I read this novel from July 6 - 7, 2017 and my review is also on Goodreads.

Next up for the August portion of the Challenge:

15. Read a YA or middle grade novel by an author who identifies as LGBTQ+.

My choices - Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour - I've seen this YA contemporary showing up around the blogosphere quite a bit lately and it's time I see what all of the fuss is about.

16. Read a book that has been banned or frequently challenged in your country.

My choice - Rainbow Boys (Rainbow Trilogy #1) by Alex Sanchez - I hadn't heard of this until recently, but I noticed that it does make ALA's Frequently Challenged Young Adult Books while also being one of ALA's Best Books for Young Adults.  And, yes, that is Matt Bomer on the cover.  My library hold came in a little earlier than expected and I just finished this relatively slim novel - definitely a must read.

Thanks as always for visiting my blog, and perhaps even commenting below!  Have you ever taken part in Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge?  Have you read any of these books before, and, if so, what did you think of them?

  1. I would love to do this challenge some day, but as a review blogger I just can't. One of these days, though! I never read non fiction anymore, and I know I'm missing out on lots of great books.

I'd love to read Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour

(Going to add that to my Goodreads, so I don't forget...)
