The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin + 50/50 Friday

On Friday's I take part in three weekly link ups - The Friday 56, hosted by Freda's Voice, Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader, and 50/50 Friday is a new weekly link up and it is hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books. For The Friday 56, you choose a book, a book you have just finished, a book you are about to start, your current read, and share a line or a few lines that grab you (but don't spoil anything) from page 56 or 56% of the way through the ebook. Post it and share your post's url on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post. As for Book Beginnings, you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires, and then link up your post's url with Rose City Reader. Then, for 50/50 Friday, every week there's a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - you share a book that suits each category and link up on the hosts blogs.

This week I'm spotlighting one of my Beat the Backlist and Avid August reads, Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin which will fulfill the task to read a book that contains romance.  I've had my eye on this historical fantasy romance for quite some time and I'm glad I've finally got the chance to get to it.  One of these days I'm going to have to watch the movie adaptation too.

Beginning:

A great city is nothing more than a portrait of itself, and yet when all is said and done, its arsenals of scenes and images are part of a deeply moving plan.

56:

They reached a street of symmetrical tenements.  The spielers lived not in the tenements themselves but within the hidden square they formed.

50/50 Friday: Favorite/ Least Favorite Abstract Cover

Favorite - The Guggenheim: Frank Lloyd Wright and the Making of the Modern Museum by Hilary Ballon, Pat Kirkham, Neil Levine, Nancy Spector, Luis Carranza, Angela Starita, and Scott W. Perkins - I haven't read this, but the cover totally fits the museum.  If you've ever visited I think you'll know what I mean.

Least - The Mothers by Brit Bennett - I haven't read this either, but the just going on the cover design alone I probably wouldn't read it.

What are you reading this weekend?  Have you read any of these books?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!

  1. I hope you like A Winter's Tale more than I did. There were parts I really loved about it, but overall I was disappointed. A friend of mine recommended it as it's her all time favorite novel. I wish I had liked it more.

I actually like both your featured covers. Haha. I haven't read either book though.

    Have a great weekend, Lauren.

  9. Covers really do start our opinions of books, don't they. I sometimes wonder what publishers were thinking when they select certain covers. My Friday Quotes
