Sci-Fi Month 2021 - Sunday Funday: Week 1 Update

Happy Sunday Funday and welcome to my first weekly update for Sci-Fi Month 2021!  Sci-Fi Month is a month long celebration of all things sci-fi and it's hosted by Lisa @ Dear Geek Place and Imyril @ One More.  (Image credit: Photo by Liu Zishan on 123RF.com with a quote from Babylon's Ashes by James S.A. Corey). So far, I'd say this year's Sci-Fi Month has gotten off to a good start.  I've already made progress on my tbr and I've started in on my watchlist as well.  Keep reading to see what I got up to since this monthly event began:

My Sci-Fi Month Posts This Week:

What I Watched This Week:

 ❋
Rugal looks like it has a lot of potential so far.  I've only watched the first two episodes (of a total of sixteen) so far, but it doesn't waste any time getting you into the story.  The action is cool and there's so much more I want to know about the rest of the Rugal team's biotech enhancements.  Plus, it's just good to see Choi Jin-hyuk take the lead again here after seeing him in the fantastic tv series Tunnel.  I can't wait to see where this show goes.

 ❋ ❋.5
In the Shadow of the Moon packs in a lot during its run time. I'm glad I went in knowing as little as possible. I liked where it went but there's still quite a bit I'd like to know more about. If you haven't seen this movie before, I recommend going into it knowing as little as possible.

My review is also on Letterboxd.

 ❋
I really liked Eternals. As far as I'm concerned, the critics missed the mark. Sure, it isn't the best MCU movie of the year (that honor still goes to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings at the moment) and it has a few missteps, but overall I had a great time getting to know all of the titular characters. The cinematography and visuals of the movie are outstanding, but I was invested in our cast. Everyone does a great job bringing their characters to life, but my favorite characters were easily Gilgamesh (Don Lee, aka Ma Dong-seok was the actor I was most looking forward to seeing and he did a fantastic job as usual), Thena, Makkari, and Kingo. The real scene stealer though was Karun, Kingo's valet/ best friend. Overall, Eternals was so much fun to experience on the big screen and I'm glad to have had the opportunity to do so. I'm really looking forward to seeing what's next for them in the future.

 ❋ ❋.5
Event Horizon is a good sci-fi horror movie. It really reminded me of a combination of The Matrix meets Cube and that look really worked for me. I wish I had the chance to see this when it was much newer. My favorite cast members: Jason Isaacs, Laurence Fishburne, and Sam Neill.

What I Read This Week:

 ❋  ❋
The Fated Sky (Lady Astronaut Universe #2) by Mary Robinette Kowal is an outstanding sequel. Kowal's world building is some of the best I've had the opportunity to experience.  It was marvelous to get back into this universe and meet these characters.  I love this author's style when it comes to historical sci-fi/ alternate history.  If you haven't started this series I can't recommend it enough. I can't wait to see what's next in The Relentless Moon!

My review is also on Goodreads.

 ❋
Gearbreakers (Gearbreakers #1) by Zoe Hana Mikuta is a decent YA LGBTQ+ sci-fi series opener.  I think I may have liked the idea of this one more than the end result, but I'm still glad I gave it a chance especially on audiobook.  Honestly, this might get a whole star for the format's production although it is a little too long with a somewhat awkward writing style.  I think I was looking for a little something else overall from this novel.  If you at all like the movie Pacific Rim, or possibly even a dash of Edge of Tomorrow, you may still want to give this a try.  I haven't decided yet if I'll try the upcoming sequel.

My review is also on Goodreads.

What have you been up to this past week?  Are you taking part in Sci-Fi Month this year?  Have you read any of these books?  As always thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below.

  5. Awesome first week - a gentle request to add your links to the master schedule. I've been throwing them in if/when I see them on Twitter, but I'm juggling work and health things this month and I'd hate to lose them to the relentless flow of the Twitter feed :)
