The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): Biggest Flirts (The Superlatives #1) by Jennifer Echols

Welcome to The Friday 56, a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice.

These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

I'm also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.  The rules are pretty simple - you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires.  Don't forget to link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.

This week I'm spotlighting Biggest Flirts (The Superlatives #1) by Jennifer Echols, which I'm just now starting.  I don't usually go for YA Contemporary Romance, but I've been hearing quite a bit about this series lately so I thought I would check it out.  Based on the title, the cover, and synopsis, I'm expecting a light, fluffy, and predictable read, but maybe it will surprise me.  As for the 56, band practice brings back memories of high school - I hope they talk more about the trombones (my instrument!).

Book Beginning:

"You must be Tia Cruz."

I glanced up at the guy who'd sat next to me and said this quietly in my ear, in an accent from elsewhere.  We were on the crowded back porch with the lights off, but beyond the porch ceiling, the summer night sky was bright with a full moon and a glow from the neon signs at the tourist-trap beaches a few miles south.

56:

"Hey!" she hollered, hurrying over from a row of trombones.  She must have forgotten Will's name, because if she'd known it, instead of "Hey!" she would have shouted an outraged Mr. Matthews!  She hustled right up to the front of his snare drum and frowned at him, hands on her hips, whistle swinging on a cord.  She was at least a foot shorter than him.  "Is that how you talked during band practice where you came from?"

  1. It does sound like a nice, light read. Probably not one I'd choose -- I try to stay away from anything that brings back memories of high school! Very cute cover, too.

    1. Usually not one I go for either, but I thought I'd give it a chance. :)

  2. This book sounds super cute. I only took band in 6th grade, but the memories are still there. (I played the flute, I wasn't very good.)

    1. I played trombone from 5th grade through 12th grade. I didn't do marching band, but I did do pep band (for basketball games).

  3. Sounds like you are probably right, a light fluffy read. Have fun with it.

  6. I think it sounds good. Mine is a YA contemporary too. I am reading Truest by Jackie Lea Sommers this week. Happy reading!

  7. I could totally visualize that scene in band practice! I played the clarinet...for a little while.

Thanks for sharing and enjoy. And thanks for visiting my blog.

  8. I like "accent from elsewhere" -- a clever way of describing her thoughts about the way he spoke. The 56 scene sounds completely realistic, too. I can see the band instructor confronting a student that way. I rarely read YA, but this sounds like a story I'd enjoy.

  10. Sounds fun! I've heard some mixed things - hopefully you'll like it! I've always wanted to read a Jennifer Echols book simply because we pronounce our name's the same way! Haha :) I play clarinet! I love it!

    1. If an author has the same first name as me, chances are pretty high I'll want to read them simply for that reason... :)

  14. The cover is super cute! I just started senior year and so senior superlatives will be coming up (in which biggest flirt is, of course, a category). This sounds like a promising contemporary novel!
