Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick - Review

Britt Pheiffer and her friend Korbie are going to backpack the Teton Range. She's not sure what to think when her ex-boyfriend, Calvin, Korbie's brother, is supposed to go along with them. Before they can meet up with him at the family cabin out in the middle of nowhere, there is a freak blizzard forcing the two girls to stop their Jeep on the road and walk to an unknown and remote cabin to seek shelter. Britt and Korbie accept the hospitality of the two handsome strangers, who happen to be fugitives on the run. Of course, the two criminals take them hostage and want Britt to guide them off the mountain. Throw in a lot extremely poor decision making, Stockholm Syndrome, rampant stupidity, a love triangle, a series of horrific murders, an ex with a serious power complex, and you've got a bad, highly predictable made-for-tv horror movie that makes you want to poke your eyes out.

For the life of me, I cannot understand how this book has such a high average rating. This easily ranks as one of the worst books I've read all year, yet somehow I actually read the entire book. Go figure...

Perhaps, I was hoping that Britt's dumber-than-a-bag-of-hammers level of stupidity would catch up to her. Unfortunately, it never does. (view spoiler)

Initially, the premise sounded interesting, although I was very wary going in because I couldn't stand Hush, Hush or its sequel. I think I liked it less than those, if possible. I tried, but there was just no way I could make it through without laughing (or yelling) at those absurd scenes when they first reach the cabin (and throughout the whole story if I'm being honest). I can't figure out how I'm supposed to take it seriously... Haven't Britt or Korbie ever seen a D-list horror movie?

Regarding, the Stockholm Syndrome plot, Britt is definitely suffering from it regardless of how much she denies it.

But I say:

Truer words were never spoken about this book, Pete.

Final verdict (if that typewriter were the book, that is. I just love Harold Lloyd, by the way! He's one of my favorite silent movie comedians.) :

I read this from November 21 - 24, 2014 and my review is also on Goodreads.

  1. Too bad. I'm a horror addict and I even like the cheesy made-to-TV ones. But this does sound pretty bad. I mean, staying with a bunch of strangers in a cabin in the woods? Umm... I think I'd risk the blizzard.

On the plus side, the cover is gorgeous! At least that's something.

And I love the OB,WAT GIFs. Where do you find your GIFs? I was tagged for the GIF Challenge but I don't even know where to find then or how to go about inserting them into posts. =/

    1. I usually do, too....but this was just sooo bad it was unbelievable.

I first saw the book at Kmart and the cover caught my eye. I picked it up and looked at the description and it didn't sound too bad...good thing I got it from the library instead of buying it.

As for the gifs, sometimes you can do a google image search, say for example " supernatural gif" or whatever you're looking for like a show, movie, quote, scene. Also giphy.com is pretty good. You can search by categories and tags which make it handy. I was really surprised to stumble upon the silent movie gifs - like I said Harold Lloyd's one of my favorites! For the most part, inserting a gif is just like adding a picture by url to your post.

  2. I'm totally with you Lauren, it JUST DIDNT MAKE SENSE. Like if Britt is so smart and everything, why does she make stupid life choices? And what's with the stockholm foreshadowing? Agggh it was frustrating.
