The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): Among Thieves (Tales of the Kin #1) by Douglas Hulick

Welcome to The Friday 56, a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice.

These are the rules:

1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

I'm also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.  The rules are pretty simple - you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires.  Don't forget to link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.

So, this week I am spotlighting the book I've just started, Among Thieves (Tales of the Kin #1) by Douglas Hulick.  I would have read this earlier, but I misplaced it.  Better late than never, right.  I've heard so many good things about this epic fantasy that it's about time I've gotten around to it.

Book Beginnings:

Athel the Grinner wasn't grinning.  In fact, he didn't look good at all.  A long night of torture will do that to a person.

I knelt beside him.  He was naked, is arms lashed across the top of the barrel, the rest of him collapsed behind.  I avoided looking at the bloody mess that had once been his hands and feet.

"Athel," I said.  Nothing.  I slapped the smuggler lightly on his sweaty cheek.  "Hey, Athel."  His eyelids fluttered once.  I wove my fingers into his hair so he could see me.  If any of the sympathy or pity I felt showed on my face, so be it.  I don't have to like what I do sometimes.  I said his name again.

56:

"How about something more to eat?  I saw that pear you had--not enough for a mouse."

"I manage."

"Well, maybe I could--"

"Cosima," I said, "I'm fine."

She paused, then took a small breath.  "That bruise on your face says otherwise."

I reached up and gingerly felt the place where Nicco had struck me.  "A reminder."

"Well, I certainly hope you don't forget whatever it is next time."

"I won't."

  6. I don't like the brutality described in the book's opening, but the dialogue in the 56 excerpt is well written. It's easy to differentiate between the male and female voices. I hope you enjoy the story.

    1. Thanks. So far that seems to be the case across the board regarding the dialog.

  7. I'm not sure what this is about, but I'm hoping the protagonist gets a little revenge.
