Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Read Because Of a Recommendation

Happy Tuesday and welcome back to Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  This week's theme is All About Books You Read Because Of A Recommendation.  My first three choices have been recommended by friends and coworkers, the next two from review and professional selection publications, the next three are from bloggers, and the last two are general recommendations that have come from many.

Blur by Steven James - One of my librarian coworkers recommended this novel to me after randomly stumbling upon it.  It's a great psychological thriller and I'll have to continue the trilogy.

Chasing the Last Laugh: Mark Twain's Raucous and Redemptive Round the World Comedy Tour by Richard Zacks - Another friend of mine recommended this nonfiction book, and let me borrow her copy, after stumbling upon it secondhand.  It's well-worth the read if you're interested in this classic American humorist.

The Dark Realm by Anthea Sharp - A friend of mine is always on the look out for great freebies for her Nook and this was one of her finds.  She had nothing but good things to say about it - I lucked out when it turned out to be free on Kindle as well!

Shadowshaper by Daniel Jose Older - School Library Journal - The audiobook came highly recommended from SLJ and Anika Noni Rose's performance truly fantastic.

Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights by Salman Rushdie - BookPage - I tried this on audio after seeing all of the praise it received in the BookPage, but unfortunately I ended up DNF'ing my first Salman Rushdie novel after 25%.

Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison - Emily @ Ink, Inc. - This is one of Emily's favorite series - and I have to say I love the sense of humor!  So far I've read the first two in the series, so I'll need to get on to book three.

Department Nineteen by Will Hill - Emily @ Ink, Inc. - This series also comes highly recommended by Emily, so when I found it at a bargain outlet I made sure to grab a copy.  Anyway, it's awesome - I highly recommend it, especially if you're a fan of The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey and Cirque du Freak by Darren Shan.

Harrison Squared by Daryl Gregory - Tammy @ Books, Bones & Buffy - I actually won a copy of this book through a giveaway Tammy hosted on her blog.  Of course, I was really excited by this creepy Lovecraftian tale after having seen all of the good things she had said about it.  It's well worth the read, as it turns out!

One for the Money by Janet Evanovich - This series has been recommended to me so many times by so many people that I finally decided to try it on audiobook.  I ended up liking it much more than I expected to - and that was partly due to Petty's narration.

Falling Kingdoms  by Morgan Rhodes - This series has also been recommended to me many times and as a fantasy lover, I had to try this out.  Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed and ended up DNF'ing the audiobook at around 15%.  Either way, I am still interested in reading other titles by Morgan Rhodes at some point.

Have you read any of these books on recommendation, or otherwise?  Have you liked liked any of these titles?  What are some of the books you've read on a recommendation?  As always, thanks for visiting my blog and for, perhaps, even commenting!

  1. Blur sounds really good. I like pyschological thrillers that are twisty and suspenseful, and sounds like this qualifies!

  11. I have the same thoughts with Falling Kingdoms! A lot of readers in the community have seemed to enjoy it but I just can't see myself reading it anytime soon (if at all). I don't know what it is but it just doesn't entice me haha.

  16. Shadowshaper and Falling Kingdoms were recently recommended to me by the children's librarian (she takes care of YA as well). I'm going to have to pick them up soon as I have seen a lot of people who like them.
