The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): The Edge of Forever by Melissa E. Hurst

Welcome to The Friday 56, a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice.

These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

I'm also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.  The rules are pretty simple - you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires.  Don't forget to link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.

This week I'm spotlighting one of my next reads, The Edge of Forever by Melissa E. Hurst.  If you haven't already figured it out, I'm a huge fan of time travel.  So I'm always on the look out for those kinds of stories, whether it's a book, tv show, or movie it doesn't matter.  This particular story sounds especially intriguing.  It has even been recommended to fans of Doctor Who and X-Men, and I love both of those.  I'm extremely excited to start this book!

Book Beginning:

Bridger
March 11, 2146

The cadets surrounding me are wilding out.  Most of them are peering out the shuttle windows at the decay of Old Denver stretching out below us.  Their excited voices grind into my skull.  I wish they'd be quiet, but I can't really blame them.  This is my class's first time trip out of our own century.  We're going to record a presidential assassination.

56:

[Bridger
March 11, 2146]

"Of course I do!  That's the whole problem.  Chancellor Tyson explained everything to me, but what if they still hold you liable?  Your career will be over, and there's no telling how that could affect me or Shan.  There's so much at stake here and you seem oblivious to it."

  3. I haven't read any time travel books, other than Stephen King's 11/22/63, which captivated me and kept me glued to the pages.

This one sounds tempting...here's mine: “THE GIRLS OF AUGUST”

  4. I love the idea of a school time travel trip! There are so many ways that can go wrong! If that had happened when I was in school I can't see any of my class behaving well!

  8. Sounds interesting. I'm not really a big fan of time travel stories though. I am spotlighting Sinner's Steel by Sarah Castille this week. Happy reading!

  10. I like the idea that time travel has been perfected enough for children to go to another time in a field trip! What a clever idea for a book.
Thank you for visiting my blog.

  13. I'm extremely picky about time travel... they're so good when done well, but so horrible when not. This one, however, sounds like it might be pretty decent.

  14. Time travel really isn't my thing because I keep thinking about the Butterfly Effect. Like, just these kids going on a school trip back in time to observe something will have repercussions on history. And then how does it effect memory? I know, I'm over-analyzing! Thanks for visiting me today.

  19. Hi Lauren,

The only time travel book I have read, was by author John Heldt and was called 'The Mine', the first book in the 'Northwest Passage' series.

I have to freely admit, that this is not one of my favourite genres and whilst I do sometimes watch 'Dr. Who', this is more to appease my husband, rather than through some burning desire to catch up with 'The Doctors' travels!!

I do like the effect of the cover art for 'The Edge Of Forever' and as always, I hope that you enjoy your book :)
