The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): The Rook (The Checquy Files #1) by Daniel O'Malley + 50/50 Friday

On Friday's I take part in three weekly link ups - The Friday 56, hosted by Freda's Voice, Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader, and 50/50 Friday is a new weekly link up and it is hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books.  For The Friday 56, you choose a book, a book you have just finished, a book you are about to start, your current read, and share a line or a few lines that grab you (but don't spoil anything) from page 56 or 56% of the way through the ebook.  Post it and share your post's url on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.  As for Book Beginnings, you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires, and then link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.   Then, for  50/50 Friday, every week there's a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - you share a book that suits each category and link up on the hosts blogs.

This week I'm spotlighting one of my current reads, The Rook (The Checquy Files #1) by Daniel O'Malley, which is also the book which will complete my character (The Knight) quest for #TheReadingQuest - it fulfills the book with a red cover square.  Anyway, I've heard awesome things about this novel and I'm already loving what I've read so far!

Beginning:

Dear You,

The body you are wearing used to be mine.

56:

"I'm about to go into the headquarters of the cult," said the twins in unison.  "Do you want commentary?"

50/50 Friday: Favorite/ Least Favorite Cover Trend

Favorite - Intricate typography, big centered titles, minimalist, photo-realistic fantasy or urban fantasy scene (see Chris McGrath)

Least - Silhouettes, backs, faces, hands, dresses

  1. Both the beginning and the 56 are intriguing. I'm reading All the Secret Places by Anna Carlyle this week. Happy reading!

  4. The opening of your book was fantastic! It made me really interested in the book! Hope you're liking it!

I'm fine with silhouettes on covers sometimes, but faces are a big no for me too!

  5. Great opening hook, and it sounds like a fun read.

  6. It really bothers me when there's faces up-close on a cover.... feels like I'm invading someone's personal space. I don't mind faces if they seem a good distance away, though.

    1. True - I usually don't mind illustrated ones either - usually it's the photos that bug me.

  7. Rook has been on my TBR for a long while. I really should read it. I may have to after reading the excerpts you shared, Lauren. Especially the opening.

I notice you and Carrie do not like Silhouettes. :-) I don't know what it is about them I do like. Maybe the fact that so much is left to my imagination.

I hope you have a great weekend, Lauren!

  8. I've wanted to try out this book for ages. I hope it's a good read for you. I'm loving that excerpt. Happy weekend!

  9. minimalist covers are something I love too. They say so much with so little. Thanks for linking up!

  10. I also really don't like faces on covers. I feel like it was just so overdone at the start of YA and a lot of the time it doesn't have much to do with the story at all which is kind of the whole point of a cover. Thanks for linking up, Lauren!
