The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): Armada by Ernest Cline + 50/50 Friday

On Friday's I take part in three weekly link ups - The Friday 56, hosted by Freda's Voice, Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader, and 50/50 Friday is a new weekly link up and it is hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books.  For The Friday 56, you choose a book, a book you have just finished, a book you are about to start, your current read, and share a line or a few lines that grab you (but don't spoil anything) from page 56 or 56% of the way through the ebook.  Post it and share your post's url on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.  As for Book Beginnings, you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires, and then link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.   Then, for  50/50 Friday, every week there's a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - you share a book that suits each category and link up on the hosts blogs.

This week I'm spotlighting my first read for Sci-Fi Month 2017, Armada by Ernest Cline.  I'm really excited to be jumping in to this novel since I loved Ready Player One!  I've heard mixed reviews about this, especially in comparison to Cline's earlier novel, but I'm still excited to see how this will stack up.  Bring on the pop culture references!

Beginning:

I was staring out the classroom window and daydreaming of adventure when I spotted the flying saucer.

56:

"When you call me 'mister' I know you're being super serious," I said.

50/50 Friday: Best/ Worst Book Read In October

Worst - Lord Foul's Bane (The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever #1) by Stephen R. Donaldson - I actually DNF'd this one.  The concept is cool (a sick man suddenly finds himself dropped into a Middle-Earth type fantasy world and can't believe it), but I couldn't get into the writing style or any of the characters at all.

Best - The Rook (The Checquy Files #1) by Daniel O'Malley - Easily one of my favorite reads of the year, and the best book I completed in October.  If you like Kingsman: The Secret Service, Supernatural, and X-Men, then I think you'll appreciate this awesome novel.

Have you read any of these books?  Are you taking part in Sci-Fi Month this year?  As always thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!

  2. I enjoyed Ready Player One but have been a little scared off from this one because of the mixed reviews. I'll be curious to see what you think of it!

  4. Dang Lord Foul's Bane does sound fascinating but if you DNFed it, I can't imagine I would get through it either. The Rook sounds really good though (and I am a lover of Kingsmen! I still have to watch the sequel though) so I'm definitely putting that on my TBR :) Thanks for linking up, Lauren!

    1. It was so grating and the characters were really irritating to me, and it sounded so good too...

The Rook though was awesome and I would love to see an adaptation of it because it could be so cool!

  5. I really had fun with Armada, I didn't like it as much as RPO but still, lots of fun. And The Rook was fantastic!

  9. I loved the beginning of Armada so much, but then it started to drag for me. Obviously, this is not my normal genre, so maybe I need to pick it back up.

  10. I've owned Armada for a long time but haven't yet picked it up. I can't wait to see what you think!

  14. I endured all of Lord Foul's Bane a couple of years ago. Endured is the key word here.

But a friend of mine who teaches English at the college level told me one of her fellow instructors tried to include it on a freshman intro class' syllabus as the novel that group would read. She then disparaged the choice, which made me curious. And after reading it, I can see why she was do disparaging of it.

    1. Well, you are definitely a better person than me for making it through that! I can't imagine having to sit through that at school...
