The Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings): Unhinged by A.G. Howard

Welcome to The Friday 56, a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice.

These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

I'm also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.
The rules are pretty simple - you share the first sentence or so and your initial thoughts, impressions, or whatever else it inspires.  Don't forget to link up your post's url with Rose City Reader.

This week I'm spotlighting my next read, Unhinged (Splintered #2) by A.G. Howard.  I'm super excited to start in on this one - I was pleasantly surprised by the first novel in the series, so I've got high hopes for this Alice in Wonderland retelling.

Book Beginning:

My art teacher says that a real artist bleeds for her craft, but he never told us that blood can become your medium, can take on a life of its own and shape your art in vile and gruesome ways.

56:

I bite my lip, searching for a subject change.  Something positive.  "You and Dad.  You're on his good side again."

Jeb winces. "Yeah, but now your mom hates me more than ever."

I study the window behind him.  "You know how overprotective she is.:

"It's not helping, you lying for me.  I heard what you said..."

Based on these two excerpts, I can tell you right now that I need to know more.  Especially regarding that 56 - what's happened between Jeb, Alyssa, and her parents, I wonder.  And that opening definitely seems to fit the tone of the previous novel.  I can't wait to begin this novel and see what's going on!

Comments

  1. Every time I see this book's cover, I'm reminded of Johnny Depp in "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory." It sounds like a good series that I'd enjoy.

    1. So do I! With maybe a hint of Edward Scissorhands thrown in for good measure. If you're interested in dark retellings, you may like it. :) Thanks for visiting!

    2. Ack -- I was just going to put in that very same comment! Lauren, based on the snippets, I can tell that this isn't some light hearted novel. It kind of creeps me out ...

  4. I was also so surprised by the first one! I mean, there's retelling a story and almost reinventing it, the way Howard did! I liked it, a lot, and also can't wait to start 'Unhinged'! You're teasers only make me more excited! Thanks for sharing :) I hope you have a great weekend!

  10. Hi Lauren,

First of all, thanks for stopping by Fiction Books today. I love 'meeting' new people, so your visits will always be welcome and your comments always appreciated.

Down to business ... I have to admit that I am not a fan of the classics being re-hashed and modernised, so this probably won't be a book for my TBR pile.

However, like everyone else, I really do find the cover art of this book, very alluring, intriguing and definitely very clever!

The opening lines, if I were to read them in isolation, are very powerful and would make me want to find out more and I can understand why, as a fan of the genre, you are looking forward to reading the book.

Have a great weekend and thanks for sharing :)

    1. Hi Yvonne, I do too and I love getting responses like this! :)

The first one doesn't quite rehash the original - it's more like the main character's great-grandmother was Alice Liddell, the real inspiration for Alice, who really went to Wonderland and came back kind of messed up. The oddness/ insanity has passed down to the female relatives, including the main character who learns that what she thought was just a story is all to real.

With the way Splintered ended, I'll be very interested to see where it goes, especially considering those snippets.

      Thanks for visiting my blog!
