Sunday Funday: Mini Reviews - Too Close To Breathe & The Killer In Me (ARC) by Olivia Kiernan + Giveaway (US Only)

Happy Sunday everyone!  Today I'm sharing two mini reviews with you: Too Close to Breathe (Frankie Sheehan #1) by Olivia Kiernan and The Killer in Me (Frankie Sheehan #2) by Olivia Kiernan (ARC) which will be available on April 2nd, 2019.  I picked up the first book in the series from the library and in a real piece of luck Dutton Books offered me an ARC of  the sequel right around the same time in exchange for an honest review.  I can officially say I've been thoroughly sucked into this mystery series.  Thanks again, Dutton!  Read on to see my thoughts on these two books and a giveaway of my ARC of The Killer In Me (US Only):

❋ ❋ ❋

Too Close to Breathe by Olivia Kiernan is a dark, intense, and addicting debut. I'm so glad I stumbled on this atmospheric suspenseful crime thriller at the library - a patron had just read it and totally sold me on it. I loved diving down the intricate rabbit hole of the central mystery. There are so many tantalizingly clever twists and turns to wrap your head around. The story is tightly plotted enough that the reveals don't feel like they come entirely left field, but the author still managed to surprise me. As much as I enjoyed the mystery itself, I also liked getting to know our lead, Detective Frankie Sheehan as well. While her character is quite flawed and damaged, she's also incredibly determined to get the job done. Like I said above, I'm glad I took a chance on Too Close to Breathe because this could be a new favorite dark and edgy mystery series.

I read this novel from March 16 - 19, 2019 and my review is also on Goodreads.

❋ ❋ ❋

The Killer in Me (Frankie Sheehan #2) by Olivia Kiernan is an excellent followup novel to Too Close to Breathe. She set the bar incredibly high in book one and the sequel doesn't disappoint. It was great to be back in Detective Sheehan's incredibly atmospheric world. I have been thoroughly sucked into this series! Kiernan's writing is complex and engrossing. The detailed world of Dublin, Ireland that her characters inhabit comes across more as a close-knit community, rather than a big city which is what I associate novels featuring a police procedural element. Either way, she creates a vivid portrait of the city. Just like with book one, the sequel also features a to-die-for mystery and fascinating characters. It's a suspenseful, gritty page turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Overall, Kiernan's psychological mystery thriller series is a must-read for fans of the genre. If you enjoy the work of Gillian Flynn, I have a feeling you'll enjoy Olivia Kiernan's style. I'm looking forward to more of her work in the future and hopefully many more Frankie Sheehan novels as well. Thanks again for this opportunity, Dutton!

I read this ARC from March 20 - 21, 2019 and my review is also on Goodreads.

  3. I don't read too many suspense-thrillers, so they still tend to surprise me, but I think it's great when this author was able to throw some nice twists your way, and that both books were good for you.
