Happy Tuesday everyone! Welcome to the Top Ten Tuesday now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is Opening Lines (Best, favorite, funny, unique, shocking, gripping, lines that grabbed you immediately, etc.). This could go a lot of ways, but this time I'm featuring my Favorite Opening Lines In YA. Here we go, in alphabetical order by title:
The screw through Cinder’s ankle had rusted, the engraved cross marks worn to a mangled circle.
– Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles #1) by Marissa Meyer
The pipe under the sink was leaking again. It wouldn’t have been so bad, except that Nick kept his favorite sword under the sink.
– The Demon's Lexicon (The Demon's Lexicon #1) by Sarah Rees Brennan
This is how I kill someone.
– The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis
There was a hand in the darkness, and it held a knife.
– The Graveyard Book by Nail Gaiman
There is no lake at Camp Green Lake.
– Holes by Louis Sachar
The first thing you find out when yer dog learns to talk is that dogs don't got nothing much to say. About anything. "Need a poo, Todd." "Shut up, Manchee." "'Poo. Poo, Todd."
– The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking #1) by Patrick Ness
The end of the world started when a pegasus landed on the hood of my car.
– The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #5) by Rick Riordan
I had just come to accept that my life would be ordinary when extraordinary things began to happen.”
– Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children #1) by Ransom Riggs
Blue Sargent had forgotten how many times she’d been told that she would kill her true love.
– The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle #1) by Maggie Stiefvater
At the time I first realized I might be fictional, my weekdays were spent at a publicly funded institution on the north side of Indianapolis called White River High School, where I was required to eat lunch at a particular time–between 12:37 P.M. and 1:14 P.M.–by forces so much larger than myself that I couldn’t even begin to identify them.
– Turtles All the Way Down by John Green
What are some of your favorite opening lines? As always, thanks for visiting my blog and perhaps even commenting down below!
Oh, this makes me want to read Holes again. The voice that Louis Sachar uses in that book ... so unique and so, so good.
ReplyDeleteI know right - if only I could experience it again for the first time. :)
DeleteI considered adding HOLES to my list this week, too. What a funny opening line. My TTT Opening Lines

For sure! Thanks for sharing. :)
DeleteI love how a good beginning- or just a really intriguing one- can set the tone for a book! Great examples. :)
ReplyDeleteOh yes! Thanks, Greg.
DeleteLove the beginnings to The Female of the Species and The Raven Boys!
ReplyDeleteModern classics!

DeleteI really need to read Cinder sometime!
ReplyDeleteMy TTT .
That series is one of my all time favorites!
DeleteI had that one from The Raven Boys on my list too! I also love that one from the last Percy Jackson book. I couldn't get into The Knife of Never Letting Go for some reason, not sure why, just wasn't feeling it at the time.

That one definitely takes some getting used to when it comes to the style.
DeleteGreat list! One of these days I think I need to give The Knife of Never Letting Go a try, purely for the dog content. I really like the first lines of Cinder and Holes, too. =)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jess! Manchee is a gem! :)
